John Corbett and former co-star Hilary Duff are reuniting for the upcoming second season of How I Met Your Father. The two previously collaborated on the 2004 film Raise Your Voice, where Corbett portrayed Mr. Tovald, Duff’s character’s music teacher. This time around, Corbett will appear as a romantic interest to Duff’s Sophie. The How I Met Your Father’s season two trailer raised some eyebrows due to the coupling (given the 26-year age difference and their previous collaboration on Raise Your Voice while Duff was still a teenager). Still, series executive producer and writer Elizabeth Berger told TV Insider that the team feels positive about the casting choice:

How I Met Your Father’s second season premieres Tuesday, Jan. 24, on Hulu. The How I Met Your Mother spin-off is written by Isaac Aptaker and Berger. The series stars Duff, Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, and Tien Tran as a group of friends living in Manhattan. The series also features Corbett’s former Sex and the City castmate Kim Catrall. Catrall portrays the future version of Sophie.
“Honestly, we started from a place of who would be the most fun for the role and you know, we were, as we always do, batting around ideas with the writers. And then the idea of Corbett came up, and we all just thought that was so exciting. And then as we sort of got further along in the process, we were like, ‘Oh, right, cool, he did this movie with Hillary a million years ago.’ And then we thought, ‘Is that weird?’ And then we thought, ‘No, it’s awesome. Hillary’s a grown woman now and everyone can handle it,’” Berger said.

Corbett gained popularity in the early 1990s when he appeared on Northern Exposure as Chris Stephens. Following his work on the critically acclaimed series, he appeared in Sex and the City, United States of Tara, and Parenthood, among others. He also starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and its sequel. A third film in the series is currently in the production stages.
