Since then, Elvis released numerous hits and starred in many movies, and it’s hard to decide which is his most famous. Elvis’ songs became timeless, and people continue to listen to them almost as much as when he was playing them live: in 2014, Elvis’ songs passed over 164 million plays on music streaming services in the UK alone. Regardless of which one is his most famous, Elvis has left a legacy that few (if anyone) can match.

When it was announced that Elvis was going to be a father, the world went wild for a while — the Presley legacy would live on. Lisa Marie Presley was born and was the only child of The King of Rock n Roll. This alone can be a lot for someone to live with, and Lisa suffered in many degrees because of the constant exposure. Nevertheless, she left her mark on the world, had an incredibly interesting life, and was able to showcase who she was with her music before sadly passing away when she was only 54 years old.

Well, it could be said that being the only daughter of one of the most iconic and famous singers of all time is enough to be interesting. Lisa Marie Presley was born in 1968, during one of the best moments of Elvis’ career. She is the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, an extremely famous couple at the time. Lisa had to deal with being under the spotlight since before she was born, which few people can handle well. Unfortunately, she had a problem with substance abuse and was sent to different institutions.

​​​​​​Lisa was a singer and songwriter, which is unsurprising considering who her father was. She released a cover of her dad’s song with his vocals, Don’t Cry Daddy, in 1997, which jump-started her career. The artist released three albums; she worked on the first one, To Whom it May Concern,” for over a decade. This paid off, as the album was #5 in the Billboard 200 Albums chart and was certified gold that same summer.

She made certain everyone knew that she was trying to not give in to the pressure of being Elvis’ daughter, but rather be herself and do what she loved. Nonetheless, she stated that she “would never take back any part of who I am or where I came from.” Her second album, Now What, premiered in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. Her last album, Storm & Grace, went heavier on the genre of blues, reminding people of her father.

Apart from her career, she had four high-profile marriages, which only enhanced how people perceived her. Her first marriage was with Danny Keough. Then, she was married to music icon Michael Jackson, and supported him when some of the first accusations against Jackson came out. She starred in his controversial video for the song You Are Not Alone.

She became engaged to musician John Oszajca, but broke that off when she met actor Nicolas Cage at a party; they were quickly married, and quickly divorced after 107 days. Her final husband was musician Michael Lockwood; they split in 2021. In less than 20 years, she had been married to four people in a whirlwind of celebrity.

In many ways, her life was also a whirlwind of tragedy. Things haven’t always been easy and fun for her. After the tragic loss of her father (and seeing his corpse when she was only nine years old), she was sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend Michael Edwards, according to interviews she has given. She lost her ex-husband when Michael Jackson died in 2009, and 11 years later, Lisa would lose her son, Benjamin Keough, to a self-inflicted gun wound.

The 79th edition of the Golden Globes happened last Tuesday. Lisa attended the event with her mother in support of the movie about her father, Elvis, receiving nominations. Austin Butler, who played Elvis in the Baz Luhrmann feature film, won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture. Lisa was interviewed on the red carpet and was present the whole event. Sadly, that was the last time Lisa was publicly seen, as she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away barely two days later.

Everyone was shocked by her sudden passing, as she also attended the pre-Golden Globes party on Sunday. They celebrated what would’ve been Elvis’ 88th birthday. Lisa made a speech at the party in honor of her late father, saying, “I am so overwhelmed by this film and the effect that it’s had and what Austin’s done. I’m so proud. I know that my father would also be very proud.”

With the premiere and success of the movie, Lisa and her family were placed once again in the spotlight. It’s a shame to witness that she won’t be able to watch the rest of the award season, which will most likely reward Lurhamnn’s movie even more and strengthen the Presley legacy further.

The Presley Legacy

There have been few families that can be considered royalty, especially in the music industry, such as the Presleys. Yet, while fame and glory are present in their history, tragedy has also made a mark in these people’s lives. They become an example that while legends like Elvis exist and change the world, they are not perfect – even if they appear to be bigger than life.

Many celebrities poured their condolences to Lisa’s family once hearing about her sudden passing, such as Luhrmann, John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Austin Butler, and many more. Lisa will be buried next to her son, in their home in Graceland. The Presley name will continue not only with Priscilla and Lisa’s three daughters: Riley, Finley, and Harper, but also with Lisa’s philanthropic work. She created a non-profit, The Presley Charitable Foundation, which funds a living space for unhoused families, called Presley Place-New Orleans. The singer also was a patron of an organization called The Dream Factory, and it’s safe to say her memory will continue in the dreams of many.
