Out of all the DC superheroes that Warner Brothers Discovery has given a spotlight to over the years through big-screen theatrical releases, nobody would have expected what the outcome would be. While otherwise popular names like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman have always been leading names in the comic book world, the movie adaptations have not struck as well at the box office, with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wonder Woman 1984 landing nowhere near projected audience positive reception rates.
On the other hand, WB surprisingly seems to be hitting home runs when it comes to lesser-known characters and their solo movies like Aquaman and The Joker, with both releasing sequels within the next two years. Another superhero that could have been considered fairly unknown to mainstream audiences but outrageously succeeded when it came to their movie theater debut is Billy Batson, or better known by fans as the powerful champion Shazam.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
With the first movie releasing in 2019 and starring Zachary Levi as the gold-plated superhero and Asher Angel as his child counterpart, the half-serious and half-comedic entry was one of the few DC Universe flicks that garnered promising acclaim from both critics and theatergoers. With Shazam not only finding his place in a world in which he felt lost but also battling the character of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who became the host for the Seven Deadly Sins, the turbulent tale of a child-turned-god pushed DC Studios, New Line Cinema, and numerous other production companies to make a sequel which will be released soon this year.
Earlier this week, Warner Bros. released a trailer for the continuing adventures of the world’s mightiest mortal called Shazam! Fury Of The Gods. With the first sneak peek being released over six months ago in early July, this will surely help fans who couldn’t wait to see all the familiar characters return to the big screen. Even a blink of an eye could take you away from some of the scenes in this action-packed trailer, so let’s work together just like the Shazam family and break it down.
The Daughters of Atlas Take Revenge
Warner Bros. Pictures
With metallic boots crashing down into the middle of a baseball field, Lucy Liu as Kalypso activates a destructive force of nature that erupts right out from the middle of the stadium and begins to destroy the ground and bleachers. With Helen Mirren as Hespera stating that they are at war, audiences watch on as cars that were once driving on the highway are instantly crushed and pedestrians flee their vehicles on the streets as the hostile strongholds roar up from the concrete. With Shazam meeting up with Hespera at an outdoor eatery, he gets sent flying backward as he sarcastically tells her that she is very menacing.
Quickly recapping what has happened since the first movie, Levi provides a voiceover as we watch the reintroduction of Adam Brody, Grace Fulton, Ross Butler, Donald Joseph Cotrona, and Meagan Good as members of the Shazam family. They all line up to take on the impending danger on the collapsing bridge as a dragon he calls Khaleesi blows up structures on a busy street sidewalk. In a traumatic contrast, Shazam warns that the daughters of Atlas are coming to hunt them down and Hespera replies in another scene, saying that children have stolen the powers of the gods by ripping it from her father’s core.
The Shazam Family Fights Back
Warner Bros.
A quirky remark from Shazam in a peaceful setting whirlwinds the audience into seeing Hespera strike down Freddy Freeman. Within some very disheartening and catastrophic antagonist scenes, the former Shazam wizard played by Djimon Hounsou says that our world will not survive this call to arms from the daughters of Atlas. In a visually packed scene, Shazam flies and tackles Khaleesi through a skyscraper. Even though Shazam is motivated to save the world, Hespera blocks him with a force field from saving Freddy as he, Hespera, and Kalypso fly away to an undisclosed location.
It seems as though with Freddy’s kidnapping, the inspiration to fight back is at an all-time low. Hearing the shazam family with demoralizing statements, Shazam then asks his former mentor to take his powers back. Powerful shots of a distant land follow, with Hounsou replying that Batson knows what must be done. With the world literally shifting in place and Grace falling through the sky, Shazam resorts to using a weapon with dangerous consequences. With all the heroes screaming in agony trying to save the world from resentful forces, viewers of the DC superhero trailer are then given a quick montage of selected clips that feature various iconic creatures from the fantasy genre including all-black unicorns, Khaleesi about to obliterate two of the Shazam family members, a vicious griffin grabbing innocent pedestrians and an armor-clad Minotaur threatening an innocent family.
Can Shazam Outfight a Dragon?
Warner Brothers Pictures
Before showing the official logo, we watch as Shazam and the fearsome blue dragon literally collide with each other. After falling all the way to the ground, our main character regains his composure and flies back up, punching the beast square in the jaw and causing the winged devil’s face to be thrust back and right into the audience’s view.
If the number of action-packed scenes that Warner Brothers Discovery stuffed into the two-and-a-half-minute trailer was not enough, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will definitely ease your god-like appetite for superhero movies when it releases in movie theaters on March 17.
