If there is one thing that Marvel fans don’t need, it is much excuse to celebrate Wolverine and actor Hugh Jackman. Therefore it is no surprise that on the 22nd anniversary of the premiere of X-Men, the first movie to feature the iconic character, Wolverine has been trending on social media as fans have rushed to commemorate the date, and speculate once again on the future of the character in the MCU.
Hugh Jackman is currently the only actor to have played the role of Wolverine on screen in a live-action movie, and with the actor having made it pretty apparent that his time in the role is now over, there are obviously many rumors and suggestions about who will be taking over the role when the X-Men make their MCU debut. However, there are still plenty of fans who want to see Jackman appear as Wolverine one more time in the upcoming Deadpool 3, and with his best-bud Ryan Reynolds at the heart of that movie, no one is really going to rule out the possibility of a cameo happening, especially with the MCU now in multiverse territory.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has always been one of the most popular Marvel characters to have appeared on screen, and having been in his thirties at the start of his Marvel run and his fifties when Logan was released in 2017, Jackman decided that it was the right time to leave the character behind and let someone new step into the role for the MCU iteration. However, after Patrick Stewart’s appearance as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, fans have once again been calling for Jackman to reprise his role one last time.

Although every popular actor in a specific role seems to be irreplaceable, there have been a number of actors who have thrived in a role that was previously dominated by another. From Daniel Craig’s James Bond to Heath Ledger’s Joker, there have been plenty of times an actor has been written off before even a second of their performance has been seen, and it is clearly apparent that Wolverine fans are going to among some of the hardest to please when a new actor is selected to take on the part in the MCU.
It is possible that Marvel Studios already known who they want to take control of the Adamantium claws, but as yet there has been no official word from Kevin Feige about when the X-Men will get their first full MCU outing, or who could be playing the core group of mutants when it happens.
That hasn’t stopped fans expressing their feelings on who they believe should be next in line to play Wolverine, and it is a pretty exhaustive list. Among those on the list are The Boys’ Karl Urban and Antony Starr, former Captain America Chris Evans, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and long-standing favorite Tom Hardy. In addition to these American Gods and Halo star Pablo Schreiber has previously said that he has discussed the role with Marvel, and recently Kingsman’s Taron Egerton has also hinted at Marvel talks that could be linked to the role.
For now though, the future of Wolverine is uncertain, but fans are more than happy remembering his past, and as long as Hugh Jackman is still acting, there will always be plenty of fans who want to see him back in the role of Wolverine in some capacity again.
