It’s official: Hugh Jackman is coming back as Logan, as has been previously confirmed by the actor and Ryan Reynolds. In the upcoming sequel Deadpool 3, Jackman and Reynolds will co-star with their respective Marvel favorites teaming up for what will undoubtedly be a highly-entertaining adventure. The announcement came years after Jackman swore he was finished with the role upon the release of Logan in 2017, feeling that his Wolverine had run its course.

Earlier this month, Reynolds revealed that it was Jackman who got the ball rolling on getting Wolverine into Deadpool 3. It’s something Reynold has wanted for years, but Jackman was the one who called Reynolds to say that he was ready to bring back Logan. Reynolds also refrained from divulging any additional details of that conversation, suggesting it was up to Jackman to tell that story on his own.

The moment has arrived with a new interview with Deadline. Jackman has shared the story behind his upcoming return by first revisiting that promise he made that he was retiring from playing Logan in any more movies. As explained by Jackman, he truly meant those words when he said them, but he realized he probably shouldn’t have made that commitment when he was watching the first Deadpool soon after.

Years went by, but Jackman was apparently never able to bury that desire to co-star in a Deadpool movie as Logan alongside Reynolds. So the actor had a revelation when he finally got some time off from performing during a run of The Music Man on Broadway in mid-August. Jackman says it was all he could think about when taking a drive during that week off, leading to a phone call made to his old pal to start the process.

Jackman insists that this wasn’t something like Andrew Garfield constantly denying he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home while knowing all the while that he’d be coming back as Spider-Man in that film. The actor swears that he was never lying about his retirement from playing Logan, even if he had a hidden desire to reprise the role. It’s just that it hasn’t been until recently that he’s changed his mind, deciding to give Logan one last hurrah after all.

Deadpool 3 will be released on Nov. 8, 2024.
