Hugh Jackman is ready to return to Wolverine with Deadpool 3. The actor’s name is synonymous with the character, as Jackman has played Logan across nine different films. Much like Robert Downey Jr. and Iron Man, fans can’t imagine another actor in the role of the beloved character. Fans rejoiced at the news of Jackman returning once more for Deadpool 3, even if he’s repeatedly said he was finished with the character.

The 2017 film, Logan, was meant to be a send-off for both Jackman and Patrick Stewart, who played Charles Xavier/Professor X in several X-Men movies. However, the departure didn’t last long as Stewart reprised his role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Disney-Fox merger allowed the beloved X-Men characters to join the long-running connected universe, with Deadpool and Wolverine making their way into the world inhabited by characters such as Thor, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. However, crossing over into the MCU wasn’t what inspired Jackman to return. Instead, he was in love with the idea of a team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine. The characters have shared the screen in the past, as Ryan Reynolds debuted as Wade Wilson in the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, the Deadpool movies are entirely different, and Jackman quickly fell in love with them after watching the first film.

During an interview with Variety, the 54-year-old actor discussed the reasoning for his return and why he changed his mind after his exit in Logan. “I went to a screening of Deadpool. I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’” he explains. “All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hrs. with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.” Unfortunately, fans will have an equally long wait for Jackman’s return, as the film is years from release. Deadpool 3 is set to arrive in theaters in just over two years, premiering on November 8, 2024.

Will Deadpool 3 Be Similar to 48 Hrs.?

     Paramount Pictures

48 Hrs. was released in 1982; however, the film was on Jackman’s mind after seeing the initial Deadpool. The buddy cop movie starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy was a success with fans, pairing the hard-nosed cop (Nolte) with a wise-cracking criminal (Murphy) as they attempt to track down a killer. The personality types would match Wade Wilson and Logan, as their characters make a fantastic pair for the upcoming film.

Previous rumors have suggested a road trip movie between the two, which could follow a similar premise to 48 Hrs. Of course, the transition to the MCU will likely be explained within the film, although there’s very little info regarding the switch to the connected universe. For now, fans will have to wait for more news regarding the upcoming film, as Deadpool 3 won’t arrive in theaters until 2024.
