Director Francis Lawrence has revealed that (casual) talks are now happening between himself and writer Akiva Goldsman regarding I Am Legend 2. A sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic action flick led by Will Smith was officially announced back in March, with Creed actor Michael B. Jordan set to star. While Lawrence states that no official conversations have yet begun, he has been pondering ideas with returning writer Akiva Goldsman.
Speaking with Comicbook.com, Lawrence also mentions that they are currently “brainstorming” things for a Constantine sequel as well, meaning that the director could soon return with follow-ups to two of his most beloved movies. The filmmaker sadly mentions that he feels I Am Legend 2 is a little while away yet, but does state that he would love to return to the helm. So far, a director has not been confirmed for the highly anticipated sequel.
“I have spoken to Akiva [Goldsman] a little bit about it, but I think that is still aways away. I’d love to do it. I’ve heard some things about I Am Legend. We actually don’t have much, just brainstorming things for Constantine, but I’m sworn to secrecy on I Am Legend.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Plot details for I Am Legend 2 currently remain unknown, but it has been revealed that Will Smith will return for the sequel alongside Michael B. Jordan. The first I Am Legend was directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich. Based on the book of the same name by Richard Matheson, the movie follows Will Smith as an isolated man in a post-apocalyptic New York whose life is threatened by hostile mutants. I Am Legend was a tremendous hit at the box office, and though there were tentative plans to make a sequel after the release of the first outing, nothing has ever materialized until earlier this year.
Considering the fate of Will Smith’s character Dr. Robert Neville at the end of I Am Legend (depending on which of the alternate endings you consider canon), many have been left wondering how exactly Smith will return. Will the project be both a sequel and a prequel? Did Smith’s character survive despite holding an exploding hand grenade? Perhaps Michael B. Jordan’s character will be tasked with rescuing a still-alive Robert Neville from the monsters he spent so many years tormenting? Only time will tell.
The Idea Behind I Am Legend 2 Has Been Described as ‘Unbelievably Cool’
Warner Bros. Pictures
Returning producer Jon Mone has teased the idea behind I Am Legend 2 saying, “It is an unbelievably cool idea, an idea that made [Will] and Akiva believe that it was worth telling another story. I really can’t say [if it’s based on any of the graphic novels], but it’s based on the minds of Will, and Akiva, and Michael B. Jordan, who came up with this incredible angle on how you can continue that story.”
Smith himself was in fact tempted back to the franchise thanks to this “cool” idea. “The idea came up. I can’t talk about it yet. But it’s a really, really cool concept and [Michael B. Jordan] was a part of creating the idea,” the Oscar winning actor said. “It was one of those I was gonna leave alone, and then I head the idea. But that might work, I think we can do that.”
I Am Legend 2 does not yet have a release date. Director Francis Lawrence meanwhile will first return to The Hunger Game franchise with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
