Idris Elba’s time as Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to have come to an end in Avengers: Infinity War. Despite the character dying at the hands of Thanos, Heimdall made his surprise return in the post-credits scene of this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, when he met Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster in Valhalla. Now Elba has addressed his appearance for the first time while speaking to Collider, and teased that you never know what could happen in for the character in future. He said

While Elba isn’t the only star to have seen his character return from the dead, kind of, the continuous retconning of death in the MCU has become something of a running theme, but it was taken to a new level in Thor: Love and Thunder. During the course of the movie, along with Heimdall’s return, Korg was at one point destroyed during the battle with Zeus, but it was revealed that as long as his mouth remains intact his species seemingly grows a whole new body back, and Zeus himself seemed to have met his demise at the hands of Thor, only to return another post-credits scene with just a wound.

“Pretty much his whole sort of like arsenal of gifts have been tapped into one way or another. He’s all-seeing, you know. But he’s quite a warrior. We’ve seen him as a warrior as well, and he has an immortality around him and that would be something that we haven’t really explored so that I think may be interesting. Hey, listen, you know, the Marvel world is ever-expanding. You just never know.”

Thor: Love and Thunder Didn’t Quite Hit The Mark For Many

Although Thor struggled a little in his first two solo movies, Thor: Ragnarok arrived as a loud, bright buddy movie that paired the God of Thunder with Bruce Banner/Hulk to amazing comic effect, and it looked like Thor’s fortunes had been turned around. Following his trauma in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame however, Thor: Love and Thunder came with a lot of expectation that it just couldn’t live up to and in its attempt to include a little bit of everything, it ended up feeling like something of a patchwork quilt of a movie.

Screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson previously revealed that director Taiki Waititi really wanted to try and balance the various characters that appeared in the movie. She said:

Thor: Love and Thunder is still playing in theaters, and as recently passed the $700 million mark at the box office.

“All of it is so in the ethos in the Taika Waititi school of screenwriting and really wanting it to feel inclusive across the board and for every character to be able to shine and subvert it in unexpected ways. There are moments where Val and Jane look at Thor, especially when he blasts out of the town hall and walks back in. ‘What are you doing?’ And later, for Jane to have those moments. It’s about giving each character a space to shine comedically without making that character the butt of the joke. That is what Taika does so well. Being able to create a space where everyone feels like they can laugh at each other, but it’s never malicious. It’s never meanspirited.”
