From the beginning, it was clear that the Harry Potter series had many secrets beneath the surface. Snape’s dark and mysterious ways and Dumbledore’s curious behavior meant there were many things Harry and the audience were waiting to discover. Throughout the franchise, some details were revealed. Prisoner of Azkaban was an essential installment for understanding the Marauders and how Peter Pettigrew betraying James and Lily would also cause Sirius to face time in Azkaban. Other details over time would reveal Snape’s hatred of James Potter and hint at Harry’s connection to Voldemort.

However, while there were hints over time, it took until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to reveal massive details or reveal answers about notable characters. Whether through Rita Skeeter’s novel or Severus Snape’s memories, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows helped fill in the blanks of essential details and elements that Harry was missing over his years at Hogwarts. Was Snape indeed a Death Eater? How come Harry and Voldemort could look into each other’s minds? However, of all the questions that the final installment finally answered, one of which was who between Harry and Voldemort would win the war.

Severus Snape’s Allegiance

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Was Severus Snape a Death Eater or an Order of the Phoenix member? Dumbledore’s trust in Snape throughout Harry’s years at Hogwarts and his time on the run is boggling to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the audience. Snape actively portrays himself as an antagonist, whether it be oppressing students in the classroom or being awful to Harry regularly. But, Deathly Hallows finally reveals the truth about which side of the war Snape gives his allegiance to. Severus Snape changed sides from Voldemort to Dumbledore after discovering Voldemort’s plot involved killing Lily. Although it is never mentioned that Snape’s motives had anything to do with a change of heart, or recognizing his views had been morally wrong, the final novel reveals Snape had been working to protect Harry all along.

The Truth About Snape and Lily

     Warner Bros.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix gave a glimpse into Snape’s past with the Marauders, but Deathly Hallows reveals the full extent of the truth. Snape and Lily had been friends throughout most of their years at Hogwarts. Having grown up near each other, they were already friends before boarding the Hogwarts Express. However, while Lily only saw Snape as a friend, Snape’s feelings grew into love and obsession. Their friendship eventually died out after their differences began to show, such as Snape’s interest in dark magic, but the final straw was when Snape called Lily a mudblood.

Harry’s Connection To Voldemort

Harry’s scar hurts when Voldemort is near; they can see into each other’s minds. How is this possible? When Harry watches Snape’s memories, he finally understands. Protecting his mind from Voldemort barely ever worked because Harry and Voldemort were connected at a much more powerful level. Harry is Voldemort’s accidental Horcrux, and thus a piece of Voldemort’s soul lived within Harry from the moment the killing curse backfired on him. Due to that, Harry can see and feel Voldemort’s emotions. That would also mean that for Voldemort to die, Harry must be killed to destroy the Horcrux inside him. Luckily, that would not mean Harry would have to remain dead. Voldemort’s refusal to check Harry’s body after completing the killing curse ends up being his undoing when Narcissa Malfoy’s choice to learn if Draco is alive and keep Harry safe outweighs her allegiance to Voldemort.

Secrets About Dumbledore’s Youth

     Warner Bros.

Rita Skeeter’s novel is a tell-all book regarding Dumbledore’s life, including his youth, and bringing out the lies he had told. For anyone curious about the previous Headmaster’s past, Deathly Hallows finally reveals the darker side of the leader of the light. Dumbledore, as a teenager, had been intrigued by power, just like Gellert Grindelwald. Their relationship would lead to their mutual interest in gathering the deathly hallows but also be a catalyst for tragedy. Albus, Grindelwald, and Abeforth’s three-way duel had resulted in the death of Albus and Abeforth’s younger sister, Ariana.

Who Would Win The War

When Harry learned of the prophecy, the question hung in the air as to who would win the war. Of course, Harry and Voldemort would have to go head-to-head eventually, and the final installment brings about the battle. After months on the run, switching wands, and destroying Horcruxes, it all comes down to the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry reveals the reason the Elder Wand was not working for Voldemort was that Draco Malfoy had won its allegiance against Dumbledore the year before, and then not long before the final battle, Harry had won its loyalty from Draco. As Harry and Voldemort’s spells finally collide, Harry makes it out of the fight alive, while Voldemort finally dies.
