The new Indiana Jones movie is practically in the can according to its director, which means that a new ending isn’t getting filmed as has been reported. Recently, composer John Williams got the rumor mill spinning when he said that the movie had “maybe another ending to shoot.” This led to speculation that a new ending was getting filmed after how the sequel performed with test screenings, suggesting that the ending as it is didn’t satisfy fans with how it ended Harrison Ford’s run as the iconic adventurer.

But James Mangold, who directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, says these rumors aren’t accurate. Taking to Twitter to respond to the speculation, Mangold says that the film is virtually finished with nothing more than a small amount of VFX work left to go. The director then plainly denies that there were ever any plans to film an alternate ending.

Responding to a fan asking about Williams’ comments, Mangold said in a separate tweet, “1) John was mistaken. Maybe read Twitter too much. 2) We’re not shooting new endings. Never did. The film is 99% finished & being rated by MPAA. 3) This imagined zany ending w/ Indy being erased & replaced is a fever dream of wounded folks angry about other films I did not make.”

Mangold has also previously touched on the rumors that Indiana Jones 5 wasn’t doing well with test screenings. On social media, Mangold had been flooded with rumors of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character “replacing” Harrison Ford’s Indy in a way that test audiences supposedly hated. He responded to some of these posts on Twitter last month, at the time stating that no test screenings had even happened.

We’ll have to wait and see how the film ultimately turns out. While Mangold says Waller-Bridge isn’t replacing Indy, nor is anyone else, she plays a key role in the sequel as Helena, the adventurer’s goddaughter. Other new cast members include Mads Mikkelsen as former Nazi soldier Jürgen Voller, Antonio Banderas as Indy’s pal Renaldo, and Thomas Kretschmann as Nazi Colonel Weber. John Rhys-Davies also returns as Indy’s old friend Sallah. Mangold wrote the film with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2023. You can watch the official trailer below.
