With Indiana Jones 5 still almost a year away, there are a lot of details to be revealed about Harrison Ford’s final outing as the intrepid archeologist. However, thanks to footage revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo last weekend, we now know that there will be a familiar face returning to the franchise in the form of John Rhys-Davies’ Sallah.
While there has been very little official information revealed about the upcoming fifth installment of the action-adventure franchise, the first footage was revealed at Disney’s event and suggested that despite Harrison Ford’s advancing years, this outing will come with the same level of thrills and stunts that has been a key part of the Indiana Jones franchise since Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. As part of that original movie, Rhys-Davies also returned to the role for the conclusion of the original trilogy, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, and now it looks like he will be back one more time to see out Indy’s adventures.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Indiana Jones 5, which seemed to be going by the simple name of just Indiana Jones at D23, although no actual name for the movie has been revealed yet, has been in development for over six years. While the film was originally meant to be directed by Steven Spielberg, when the legendary filmmaker took a step back to concentrate on other projects, such as his upcoming Oscar-contender The Fablemans, directorial duties were passed to James Mangold. The reactions to the first footage seem to suggest that Mangold has risen to the challenge of following Spielberg’s previous four Indiana Jones movies, and Ford himself has certainly thrown himself into the role one more time.
Disney’s D23 Revealed More Details About Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Indy 5 Character
It has been a long road for Indiana Jones 5, having seen filming delays through both the Covid pandemic and Harrison Ford’s arm injuries that were sustained early in production. However, much of what can be expected from the movie has remained under wraps, including many of characters that will be appearing alongside Indiana in the movie. One of these is Helena, who is played by British actress, comedian and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Thanks to Disney D23 Expo, it has been revealed that Helena is the goddaughter of Indy, which has led to more speculation about how the character will fit into the story.
There have been no other details about Helena confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney, meaning that everything else is currently just fan speculation. That includes possible family ties to the original Indiana Jones movies, with many fans believing Helena could be the daughter of Denholm Elliott’s character Marcus Brody, who was a British academic and friend of Indy in the original movies. There is still plenty of time for fans to speculate some more on this, as the film isn’t set to be released in cinemas until June 30, 2023, meaning we won’t probably see an official teaser trailer until the end of the year at the earliest.
