That’s a wrap on Indiana Jones 5. After spending years in development hell and dealing with multiple delays and other problems throughout production, filming has now officially been wrapped on the upcoming sequel. The news comes straight from producer Frank Marshall who made the announcement on Twitter by posting an image of an “Indy” hat given to the cast and crew as a wrap gift. You can look at the announcement post below.

The upcoming film, which doesn’t yet have an official title, is the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones series following 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There were early plans to make another film immediately following that film’s release, but the fifth movie could not get off the ground for many years. In 2016, Disney announced a 2019 release date for Indiana Jones 5 with Steven Spielberg directing and Harrison Ford returning in the lead role.

Various delays would stall Indiana Jones 5’s release plans, pushing the film back further and further. By 2020, Spielberg had stepped down as director though he would remain on the project as a producer. This led to James Mangold coming in to direct, also changing the creative plans by penning a new script with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, with whom he’d collaborated on Ford v Ferrari. Producing alongside Spielberg are Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, and Simon Emanuel.

“I understand wariness, I live it,” Mangold posted on Twitter in 2021, referring to concerns Indiana Jones fan had with a new director at the helm. “I don’t know if I’ll make you happy. But my team & I will knock ourselves out trying to make something good. We admire the craft of the originals. I hope when you see real images, they’ll look better to you than paparazzi shots from bushes.”

Of course, Harrison Ford is back as Indiana Jones, cinema’s most popular archaeologist. He’ll be joined by franchise newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas, and Oliver Richters.

Indiana Jones 5 Promises to Be Great, Star Mads Mikkelsen Says

Fans will have to wait and see how the film turns out, but Mads Mikkelsen had some high praise for the screenplay. Last year, Mikkelsen said the sequel features “such great storytelling” and that the movie is all he had been hoping it would be.

“I’m very, very excited about it,” the actor said. “I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, it is so well-done and so charming, and it’s such great storytelling. So yes it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise that I grew up with… I’m in a lucky position where they let me read the script before. And yes, it was everything I wished it to be, so that was just great.”

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
