Indiana Jones will face off against his oldest adversaries in Indiana Jones 5. Although the movie is set in 1969, Jones will find himself once again battling Nazis, this time against the backdrop of the 60s space race. Having faced the Nazi’s multiple times, including in his first adventure, Raiders of the Lost Ark, it seems only fitting that the regime should be his final opponents. But what are Nazi’s doing in 1969 New York?
Empire Magazine revealed new plot details about the as yet untitled Indiana Jones 5. Harrison Ford’s Indy will find himself in 1969, an old man who feels even more out of time in an era of astronauts and space exploration, having been someone much more interested in the history and secrets hidden on Earth. However, the appearance of some ex-Nazis stirs Indiana into action, as co-writer Jez Butterworth explained.

“The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose… It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.”
Is Indiana Jones 5 Based on Real Events?
For the most part, Indiana Jones 5 will remain very much a fictional story, about a fictional character. However, this time around, rather than just being set in a rough time period, the film has its story centered around the real life 1969 moon landing and includes a huge spectacular chase sequence that takes place in the Apollo 11 ticker tape parade.
There is also a little bit of truth in the movie’s central villain, Voller, who is played in the movie by Fantastic Beasts and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen. The character will be pitted against Indy in a race to get his hands on something that can “change the world”, and is partly based on the real life former Nazi-turned NASA-engineer Wernher Von Braun.
Obviously, there are many more reveals about the plot, characters and how everything will come to a conclusion for Indiana Jones, as well as that title reveal and the first trailer. When it comes to the latter of these, director James Mangold recently teased that the trailer will be arriving in “less than 30 days.” This would mean an online premier sometime before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which is expected to carry the teaser in its trailers.
There is a buzz building around the movie, and with the story seemingly creating a sense of both the new and the nostalgic, it seems certain to bring the story of Indiana Jones to a fitting and satisfying conclusion. Indiana Jones 5 will be released worldwide in cinemas on June 30, 2023.
