Invincible is based on the Skybound/Image comic book series of the same by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. The story follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age - except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

Kirkman is also known as the creator of The Walking Dead, which was developed into a long-running television series on AMC. Steven Yeun, the voice of Invincible, previously starred as fan favorite Glenn Rhee on the popular zombie drama. Now an Oscar-nominated actor, Yeun was up for Best Actor at the Academy Awards on Sunday, ultimately losing to Anthony Hopkins. Yeun’s performance in the acclaimed movie Minari has been universally praised.

Other cast members in Invincible include Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Zachary Quinto, Mahershala Ali, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin, and Khary Payton. Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert, and Catherine Winder produce. Jeff Allen is Supervising Director with Linda Lamontagne serving as casting director.

Kirkman’s second-longest running comic book series, the Invincible comic ended its run in 2018 after 15 years. In 2019, Kirkman also ended The Walking Dead comic series. Both titles premiered in 2003. It remains to be seen if Invincible will have quite the same run on the small screen as The Walking Dead on AMC, but getting a two-season renewal at the end of season 1 is a good start. Meanwhile, The Walking Dead will end on AMC next year after 11 seasons.
