Avatar director James Cameron is coming to terms with the fact that the world of Pandora will now dominate his life and career. With the first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, now making over $1.5 billion at the box office (and thus well on its way to pass breakeven), Cameron has accepted that he will now have to make the multiple Avatar sequels that have been scheduled. Sequels that will take the filmmaker through to 2028.

Appearing on the latest episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, Cameron once again revealed that Avatar 3 is already “in the can.” However, despite this, and despite the mammoth monetary success of Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron does admit that things in the movie business can change rather suddenly.

“It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our breakeven in the next few days, actually, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other these other sequels. And I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon, you know, with the top folks that Disney about, you know, the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film. And then avatar four and five are both written we even have some of four in the can. So you know, I think we can see that that I think we’ve begun a franchise at this point.”

With Avatar: The Way of Water now crossing the $1.5 billion mark and becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2022, audiences can expect to see a lot more from Jake, Neytiri, and their family for many years to come.

“Not so bad. I mean look, I understand this business and I understand the vagaries of it and the variables and you know the old expression you know, man proposes God disposes you never quite know what’s going to happen. I also believe in planning for the upside not not sort of just making a movie Herky jerky and then waiting to see what happens but plan for the upside and then accept that if it doesn’t work.”

While details of Avatar 3 remain largely under wraps at present, Cameron has recently revealed some insight into what we can expect. The director hopes to change things up a little by introducing another tribe of Na’vi, a fire tribe known as the ‘Ash People,’ and thus put a more negative light on the Pandoran natives.

“I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because [so far] I have only shown their good sides,” Cameron revealed. “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In ‘Avatar 3,’ we’ll do the reverse.”

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters, with three more sequels scheduled. Avatar 3 is currently due for release on December 20, 2024, with further installments scheduled for December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
