James Gunn’s future with Marvel has been discussed for a long while now, and the director has addressed the subject in the cryptic way he usually does. As you would expect with any news from the Guardians of the Galaxy director, it feels like he is revealing something new without actually revealing anything at all, and he even felt like he had to follow up with a secondary comment to try and clarify what he was saying.

Gunn is currently in the last weeks of filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios, and is already involved in a second season of Peacemaker, and potentially two other DC shows with Warner Bros, so it is safe to say that he is pretty busy right now. However, while Gunn didn’t suffer too badly after originally being fired by Disney over a series of decade-old tweets, it is safe to say that his current workload may have been very different right now if that had not happened. As it stands, though, it is still very likely that his current work with Marvel could be the last time he works on an MCU project, but he seems intent on keeping his cards close to his chest on the matter.

When asked on Twitter what Marvel character could be handed to him carte blanche to make him jump on board the Marvel train again, Gunn replied: “There are presently no characters at either Marvel or DC that I want to be working with right now that I am not.”

He then followed this up with two further tweets that read, “Well…what I said was “There are presently no characters at either Marvel or DC that I want to be working with right now that I am not.” And yes I know it’s either obtuse or linguistically Olympian depending on your point-of-view. Whatever the case, I’m currently working on a lot of projects, including a few unknown to the general public, & I’m speaking for where I am right this moment, not tomorrow or next year or five years down the line.”

James Gunn Has Been Enjoying A Lot of Freedom at Warner Bros. on His DC Projects

While Marvel Studios is well known for having some set rules around their movies and TV shows, and while James Gunn has previously said that they don’t really get involved in too much of the day-to-day work on the progress of filming and such, he has certainly found more creative freedom working on Warner Bros.’ The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, mostly thanks to their R-rated content.

In Peacemaker, Gunn was even allowed to include a surprise appearance by the Justice League and have Aquaman drop an F-bomb, something that you couldn’t see Marvel allowing him to do with any of the Avengers. The writer/director has made it clear that he loves working on projects that allow him to push boundaries and cater to a more mature market, and with that, he has landed on his feet at Warner Bros. For many of his fans, the more to come from Gunn at the studio, the better.
