James Gunn is well known for shutting down various rumors when engaging with followers on Twitter. For that reason, his recent response to a question asking whether there will be any kind of Justice League Dark Universe coming to the rebooted DCU, Gunn’s response was rather telling in its lack of denial.
There have been many changes recently around the upcoming slate of DC movies being made by Warner Bros. Discovery. This has included the cancelation of many popular or long-awaited movies and TV shows, and only a small hint about what could be coming in the next few years once the known run of movies including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash are done and gone.

However, James Gunn has continued to be his usual forthcoming self on social media, where he has continued to regularly respond to questions about his new role at DC Studios, as well as his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 swansong at Marvel Studios. While Gunn has spent a lot of time recently bluntly shutting down rumors like the return of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern and more, when asked about the possibility of Justice League Dark existing in the live-action franchise, the writer/director was rather vague in his reply. He simply said:
Coming from someone who has no issues giving a flat out no when asked about including certain groups and characters in his movies, this is almost a confirmation that we will see a combined Justice League Dark Universe appearing at some point in the future.
“Why not.”
Could James Gunn Revive The Justice League Dark Project?
One thing that cannot be denied is that James Gunn and Peter Safran have a lot of toys to play with when it comes to the DCU plan going forward. While it has been made clear that there is not going to be a very clean transition between what has gone before and what is coming, for those willing to stick with the new DC Studios CEOs there could be some good things coming to the franchise in the next few years.
This could very well include the revival of the Justice League Dark project, something that has been in contention at Warner Bros. Discovery for many years in a number of forms. The supernatural team were first discussed as a Guillermo del Toro-directed movie, but creative differences and numerous delays saw that attempt fall apart. In its wake, J.J. Abrams seemed to be taking over, redeveloping the project as a combined TV and movie universe. However, those plans seemed to have gone south when the HBO Max Constantine and Madame X series were both scrapped as part of this year’s overhaul of the DC franchise.
Whether those plans could now be brought back to life under Gunn and Safran’s tenure is a strong possibility, but with Keanu Reeves set to return in a movie sequel to his Constantine movie, the question of whether he could be the one leading the franchise is one that everyone wants answering.
