James Gunn has made it pretty evident that as part of his time at Warner Bros. Discovery working on DC projects, he would love to do something with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Following the announcement that Lady Gaga would be taking on the iconic villainess role in Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker sequel, Gunn was asked to share his thoughts on the casting. It seems like he is very much on board with it and looking forward to seeing the result.
Joker was released in 2019 and, just like this year’s The Batman, the film was praised for abandoning all previous screen iterations of its title character and delivering a real, ground-level story that stripped back all of the fantastical elements usually associated with it and revealed a very human story. The movie went on to win big at the Oscars and other awards ceremonies, and while there were immediate questions about a possible sequel, the subject was mostly played down for the best part of three years. Last week, Joker: Folie a Deux was officially announced in style, with Lady Gaga sharing the news in a teasing video on her social media accounts.

Among the many DC fans intrigued to find out what Joker’s universe will do to Harley Quinn, who is likely to have the same kind of grounded twist that Joaquin Phoenix brought to Joker, James Gunn is looking forward to meeting this version of the character. In response to being asked on his Twitter account about his feelings on the subject, Gunn replied:
“I’m really interested to see what Todd Phillips cooks up. I met Lady Gaga once and she was really nice, so I’m always rooting for nice people to do well.”
James Gunn Could Helm His Own Harley Quinn Project
Fans of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and the universe he seems to be building around the ragtag gang of comic book villains, are eagerly waiting to see what the writer-director does next when it comes to his DC vision. While he is already working season 2 of Peacemaker, Gunn has made no secret that he is also working on another mystery project. Having expressed an interest in working with Margot Robbie on a Harley Quinn project, some have started to hope that this could be where he heads next, but Robbie’s enigmatic blonde psychopath has some tough competition.
Since the arrival of The Suicide Squad, Gunn has made it apparent that he would love to do numerous spin-offs with the characters of the movie, and there are many of the unique and intriguing characters that fans would be happy to see return. From Idris Elba’s Bloodsport to Sean Gunn’s Weasel, there are endless possibilities as to where Gunn could reach to for his next project, and after the mangled mess the DCEU has become, many are just pleased to see a little bit of continuity in whatever form that takes.
Joker: Folie a Deux will hit cinemas on October 4, 2024, while James Gunn’s future projects are expected to arrive over the next two years.
