James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has commented on the recent cancelations of the TV shows Titans and Doom Patrol by HBO Max. Both shows, created by Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, were running for four seasons before being canceled. Fans of the shows have expressed disappointment and some suspect that the newly launched DC Studios may have played a role in the cancelation. However, Gunn has stated that he had no involvement in the decisions and wished everyone involved in the shows the best of luck in their future projects. He and Peter Safran were only appointed as the heads of DC Studios in November and therefore had no involvement with either Titans or Doom Patrol.

The cancelation of Titans and Doom Patrol comes at a time when Warner Bros. Discovery is undergoing a major restructuring, and we will likely see more changes in the coming months. HBO Max has been making several changes recently, including canceling the Gossip Girl sequel after only two seasons. At the same time, they have also axed other series and projects in development as part of their tax write-downs. The CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery, Gunnar Wiedenfels, has stated that they are done with canceling projects, indicating that the decision to cancel Titans and Doom Patrol was made prior to his statement.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are expected to bring new and exciting projects, ideas, and perspectives to the franchise, leveraging their experience and expertise in the industry. Their past track record in the industry is a great asset to the studio, and fans of the DC Universe have been eagerly awaiting news about what new projects they have in store. While it’s unclear whether the announcements that will be made later this month will include previously reported projects such as a Superman reboot written by Gunn or a second season of Peacemaker, or if they will be entirely new movies and television shows for the HBO Max streaming platform.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to end both Titans and Doom Patrol was made before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios. Both shows were given proper endings as they could write their current seasons with a fitting conclusion.
An HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement that:
Despite the disappointment, fans can take comfort in the fact that the remaining episodes of Titans and Doom Patrol will still be released on HBO Max. They will still be able to see how the storylines and characters develop and say goodbye to the shows properly.
“While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings.” The statement further added, “We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series. We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures. For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”
