With the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, James Gunn has revealed who his favorite character of the festive addition to the MCU is. While there are plenty of characters to choose from, it seems that Gunn bypasses regular Guardian members such as Star Lord, Drax and even Groot to choose “the greatest MCU character ever” – Kevin Bacon.
Kevin Bacon’s introduction to the MCU has been teased on many occasions in the last couple of years, and with the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special trailer it was confirmed that Bacon will be one of the star attractions in the MCU Special Presentation playing a fictional version of himself. Having been a constant feature of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, being referenced frequently by Peter Quill aka Starlord as a “great hero” from Earth, who often recites the story of Footloose during his adventures.

Now Kevin Bacon will be central to a plot by Drax and Mantis to cheer up Star Lord by delivering him the ultimate Christmas gift of his idol. For James Gunn, having Bacon in the special is clearly a big thing, as he shared on his Twitter account that the MCU newcomer is his “new favorite MCU character.”
Kevin Bacon Fans Go Wild For His Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special MCU Debut
Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Be Set Up By The Holiday Special?
Marvel Studios
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special seems like a throwaway bit of fun, but despite its comical Kevin Bacon kidnap plot, the Special Presentation will have the task of setting up next year’s final run out for the current Guardians team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. James Gunn has previously confirmed that fans should watch the Holiday Special before going into Guardians 3, which will be an emotional farewell for some of the team that has been a part of the MCU since 2014. Gunn has previously said of his Guardians finale:
Of course James Gunn has this week been announced as co-chair and CEO of DC Studios at Warner Bros. Discovery along with Peter Safran, and while it was pretty much set in stone that Gunn’s Marvel journey was ending with next year’s movie, this new announcement completely sealed the deal and Gunn’s affiliation with Warner Bros. Discovery and the DCEU. Having already scored hits in the DC franchise with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, it seems that although he is sorry to say goodbye to the MCU’s ragtag Guardians team, there are bigger and brighter things coming for the writer director in the near future.
“It was emotional making it, for sure. There was, of course, so much fun in the film and seeing fun sequences where the emotion isn’t so heavy, but ohh, there are scenes where the emotion is heavier than it’s ever been in the Guardians world. It was hard to get through some of it. It definitely feels like the most epic. It’s complex, and the characters are having to deal with that. It’s very emotional for all of them.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be released on Disney+ on November 25, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 hits cinemas on May 5, 2023.
