In the MCU, big actors have played some relatively small roles. Vin Diesel has managed to play a huge role, with seemingly little work as the voice of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. However, the Fast and Furious star has been constantly providing new dialogue throughout his time as the MCU icon. James Gunn recently revealed in a Twitter comment that while other actors were auditioned for the role, but Diesel was the one who “made Groot feel like Groot.”

Despite being in the midst of masterminding the new DCU, James Gunn has continued to be as active on ever on his Twitter account, answering fan questions and sharing teases of what he is working on. One fan questioned Gunn on what helped him decide to take on Diesel as the now iconic voice of the Guardians of the Galaxy team member. In response, Gunn said:

While it seems like the voice of Groot is something that could be performed by any number of stars, it seems that there was only ever really going to be one voice for Groot. With the Guardians of the Galaxy story coming to an end, the future of Vin Diesel’s Marvel journey is uncertain, but there is still at least one more outing for Groot coming in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“We had a bunch of other versions/voice artists but Groot didn’t feel fully Groot until Vin did his voice.”

Will Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Kill Off Groot?

Groot has had a long journey in the MCU. After making his appearance in the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie as the elderly, intimidating side-kick of Rocket Racoon, Groot made a sacrifice in the movie that saw a new sapling of himself being created and going on to steadily grow over his subsequent appearances. Having gone through phases of Baby Groot, Teen Groot and most recently “Swoll Groot” in the Guardians Holiday Special in December, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will almost bring Groot back to something near to the size and power of his original appearance.

With so many members of the Guardians seemingly dropping out of the franchise with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, one of the biggest questions is whether Groot will live to fight another day in the MCU, or whether he will once again become a casualty of the franchise’s ever evolving storyline.

Wherever Groot’s story goes, fans of Vin Diesel will not be too far away from the actor’s next appearance with Fast X promotion starting to rev up as the Fast and Furious franchise gets ready to race towards its two part climax. Diesel has already been teasing the upcoming movie with behind the scenes images of his co-stars including Marvel star Brie Larson and DC’s Aquaman actor Jason Momoa who will both be joining the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will be opening in theaters on May 5, while Fast X will follow just two weeks later on May 19.
