James Gunn is more than ready for the release of the third and final adventure of his Marvel heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. III, the last installment in the trilogy that introduced a very different kind of team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014.
With the actors and the director set to let go of such an important part of their careers, some surprising details about the story have come to light. According to Gunn himself, and despite what everyone thinks, it seems that Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is not the main character of the saga. The director recently spoke with Empire to discuss his characters, revealing who he believes to be the protagonist of his trilogy (via The Direct):

Created in 1976 by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Keith Giffen, Rocket Racoon debuted in Marvel Preview #7. He’s played by Bradley Cooper in the MCU, and has appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and The Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special (2022).
“I would say Peter’s kind of a mess. I think he’s suffering from major detachment issues. For me, Rocket was always the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. You’ve never seen Rocket in any movie not do something altruistic. He’s never done anything other than for his friends. He’s not a hero in the typical sense of the word. Telling his story was really important to me”.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. III will be an emotional ride for the fans and the characters, with the team getting together for the last time to look for Gamora and have an excellent final adventure. But the movie is also set to be a door to new things for the MCU. And Adam Warlock is proof of it.
Will Poulter will debut in the superhero genre as the popular character who will cross paths with the Guardians in the film. And, according to James Gunn, he won’t be a good guy.
Originally named Him, Adam Warlock debuted in Fantastic Four #66–67 in 1967, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Later, Roy Thomas and Jim Starlin redesigned him. Warlock is a cosmic being artificially created on Earth by the Enclave, genetically engineered to be perfect, and the next evolution of humanity.
“It’s kind of more complicated than that. But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.”
