Next week is the 20th anniversary of the live-action Scooby-Doo movie and co-writer James Gunn has shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of the movie to celebrate the occasion. The first live-action movie starring the loveable Great Dane saw Neil Fanning providing Scooby with a voice, while Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. took on the human roles of the Mystery Inc crew.
Scooby-Doo was released on June 14, 2002 and saw the spooky mystery solvers going their separate ways after a number of disagreements. Reuniting two years later on the aptly named Spooky Island, the gang must work together to solve a new mystery of tourists being turned into mindless zombies. Critically the movie was a disaster, but it was a financial success and spawned a sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

In his post, Gunn led a premature celebration of the movie’s release and the biggest boost to his career. He wrote:
While the sequel didn’t really do anything to turn critics around and only made around half of the original movie at the box office, that hasn’t stopped the 20th-anniversary from renewing calls for a new reunion of the cast for the third movie. However, the chances of that are pretty slim, especially with the Scooby-Doo franchise having moved off in different directions in the last decade. But in a time of nostalgic franchise returns, who knows what the future may bring.
“[Scooby Doo] was released 20 ago today. Saturday I got a call from the head of Warner Bros at 5:30 am, telling me we were going to have the biggest June opening ever. My life changed in one moment; I’m incredibly grateful for that & everything since.”
Matthew Lillard Has Opened a Mystery Machine Airbnb

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the movie, the film’s star Matthew Lillard is offering the opportunity for fans of the movie to spend a night in the Mystery Machine, which the star is hosting on Airbnb. Posting a video on his Instagram account, Lillard went into Shaggy mode to promote the venture, one that will surely be taken up by a few fans in the near future. In the video, he said:
However, those wishing to spend a night in the Mystery Machine will have to be quick as the booking opens at 1 pm today (Thursday, June 16) and will see just three nights be available for stays between June 24 to 26, with two people allowed to stay per night for $20. Those lucky enough to secure a night’s stay in the Mystery Machine will also receive a virtual greeting from Lillard, as well as all-you-can-eat snacks and other little treats.
“Zoinks! It’s been 20 years since I played Shaggy in the first live-action Scooby-Doo film by Warner Bros., but his spirit has been with me since. To celebrate, I’m throwing it back to 2002 with a totally groovy stay in the gang’s beloved Mystery Machine, monsters not included.”
