Warner Bros. Discovery’s upending of the DCEU caused some worries amongst fans as to which upcoming projects would still go ahead. With the recent announcement of Keanu Reeves’ return as Constantine, which subsequently led to the cancelation of a Constantine series and Madame X at HBO Max, that has led to another wave of fan concern over James Gunn’s upcoming projects, including the second season of the John Cena-led Peacemaker. However, Gunn has seemingly put all fears of Peacemaker being derailed with a new post suggesting filming on the second season of the Suicide Squad spin-off is ready to start in the coming months.

James Gunn’s first entry into the DCEU with The Suicide Squad was a runaway success, and with the writer/directors seemingly looking for a new place to stick around for a while with his Marvel Cinematic Universe journey coming to an end with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, he seems to have settled in well at Warner Bros. Discovery. Now, having recently teased a new project with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Gunn has now suggested that he is ready to get things moving on Peacemaker’s new season. In a Twitter post celebrating the birthday of Danielle Brooks, Gunn shared some behind the scenes Peacemaker shots and wrote:

“Happy Birthday, @thedanieb! Love you and looking forward to hanging with you again, on set & off, in just a few months!”

The success of The Suicide Squad led to the unexpected arrival of spin-off TV show Peacemaker, with John Cena reprising his role as the titular hero who is pulled into a mission for A.R.G.U.S. with Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller calling the shots. Landing on HBO Max at the same time as Disney and Lucasfilm put out The Book of Boba Fett, and proved its worth by beating The Mandalorian spin-off series as the most in-demand series airing at the time.

It didn’t take long for a second season of Peacemaker to be announced, with Cena returning for more of the same bloody action and profanity-filled dialogue that made the series a hit. While the first season brought a number of surprises, including a much publicized appearance by the Justice League in its finale, there is no telling what Gunn could come up with for the new season. He previously hinted at having a lot of freedom at Warner Bros. Discovery, and teased more cameo appearances, commenting:

While the DCEU is currently very much up in the air at the moment, it certainly looks like the long term plans of the franchise include plenty more input from James Gunn, and that can only mean good things for those who like their comic book adaptations a little more on the mature side. The second season of Peacemaker is likely to air sometime early in 2023 on HBO Max.

“I think we’re going to see more connections in some other stuff as we move forward with Peacemaker and other shows at HBO Max. So those [cameos] will keep coming. I don’t know if the Justice League is going to show up in every season of Peacemaker; that might be a one-time thing. We’ll see!”
