Another update has just arrived about the Spawn reboot that just can’t seem to make its way out of development hell, though this one appears to be promising. As it stands, only one live-action Spawn movie has made it to theaters with the widely-panned film starring Michael Jai White releasing in 1997. Plans for a sequel were eventually abandoned after the movie tanked, and though there have been attempts for years to get a reboot going, cameras have yet to start rolling on a new Spawn film.
By 2018, however, significant progress seemed to have been made when Jamie Foxx boarded the project to star in the lead role. At one point, it was also reported that Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) would be co-starring alongside Foxx as well. Ultimately, filming was postponed indefinitely thought the project wasn’t outright canceled. It had since been placed on ice, leaving fans skeptical that the film will ever see the light of day.
Fortunately for Spawn fans, Foxx appeared to be very optimistic about how things are going with Spawn in a new chat with ComicBook.com. The actor said he’s conversed with Todd McFarlane about their goal to present a new Spawn film that’s different from the others to come before it, such as the live-action theatrical film and the animated series on HBO.
Foxx then explained how the success of Joker helped get Spawn back on track, as the new Spawn will similarly utilize a smaller budget compared to most other superhero-based movies.
Todd McFarlane Wants the New Spawn in Theaters
New Line Cinema
One possible snafu holding up production could be in where the movie will end up. Todd McFarlane is insistent that Spawn should at least start in theaters, as he feels it would be much harder to get any potential sequels or spinoffs out of the project should it go straight to streaming. As he previously told ComicBook.com:
In any case, for the fans waiting to see it, let’s hope the film can finally end up happening, as it’s gotta be now or never.
