Jamie Lee Curtis penned an emotional tribute to her late mother, actress Janet Leigh. Leigh, the actress, immortalized through the iconic shower scene in Psycho, graces the cover of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time issue. In addition, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, which starred Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, is recognized by the publication as the number one movie of all time.

Leigh is best known for her role in Psycho, and the shower scene is widely considered one of the greatest moments in horror movie history and a source of inspiration for many films that followed. Just this year, actress Drew Barrymore shared with Curtis that she drew inspiration from Leigh for her performance in Scream. Psycho debuted in 1960 and is considered by many to be the first-ever slasher film, paving the way for the gory films of the 1970s and 1980s. It was Hitchcock’s first horror movie and is widely considered one of his best films.

“I woke up this morning missing my mother and wishing she could see the beautiful family that I have and that her two daughters are well and thriving and for her to enjoy this magical, creative year I’m having, after such a long time in the same industry she loved. The miracle of the movies is that they last forever, in perpetuity. How thrilling to see her legacy today through the loving portal of @variety as the number #1 movie of all time.”

Before Leigh’s death in 2004, she shared the screen with her daughter for The Fog and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. Curtis, whose father is actor Tony Curtis, followed in her mother’s scream queen footsteps early in her career. Her breakout role came through her portrayal of Laurie Strode in 1978’s Halloween (a role she would continue to reprise for over four decades). She appeared in other slashers through the late 1970s and early 1980s, including Prom Night, Terror Train, The Fog, and Halloween II.

In 1983, Curtis appeared in the John Landis comedy Trading Places, opening doors for her crossover to other film genres. Throughout her expansive career, Curtis has appeared in many films and series, including A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies, My Girl, Forever Young, Freaky Friday, Christmas with the Kranks, You Again, Scream Queens, Knives Out and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her appearance in Everything Everywhere All at Once has earned Curtis an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She will next appear in Eli Roth’s Borderlands and Disney’s Haunted Mansion as Madame Leota.
