In anticipation of the Disney+ upcoming Japanese original series, Gannibal, the network has released its first trailer. With a storyline taken straight from Masaaki Ninomiya’s bestseller Manga series, Gannibal has a unique storyline exclusive to the network. The show is set to premiere on Dec. 28, only on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar.
Takamasa Oe and Teruhisa Yamamoto adapted Gannibal for the screen. Their work on Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Academy Award-winning feature Drive My Car earned them both Oscar nominations earlier this year. Disney announced at its annual content showcase in Singapore that the show will debut on Disney+ worldwide on Dec. 28. Considering their growing popularity, fans can expect a stronger line-up in the coming year as the company pushes out more regional content. Gannibal’s first trailer was released on YouTube after the event, and you can check it out from the link below:

What is the Story Behind Gannibal?
Disney+
Kuge is the setting for Gannibal, A fictional Japanese village featuring the freshly hired local policeman Daigo Agawa (Yuya Yagira.) Similarly to most stories, things begin promisingly, but as they progress, a series of alarming circumstances escalate into the main plot point. After experiencing these events, Daigo discovers something is seriously wrong with the village and its people. As much as the police officer wants to bring criminals to justice as quickly as possible, he faces a hostile environment and suspense at every turn.
As part of The Walt Disney Company’s APAC programming line-up, Gannibal has been confirmed as one of the most recent series to air. The series joins various collections announced by Disney during its content showcase, including Dragons of Wonderhatch, House of the Owl, and Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown. Teruhisa Yamamoto, a producer of Gannibal, says it is a thriller that will have audiences gasping with shock after each episode. Interestingly, the show reflects how family values and culture differ and yet are all so relatable at first glance.
As the main character of the series, Yuya Yagira won the 57th Cannes International Film Festival Actor Award for his performance in Nobody Knows. In addition, Gannibal is directed by Shinzo Katayama (Siblings on the Cape.) Among the show’s co-stars are Show Kasamatsu (Tokyo Vice, Love You as the World Ends) and Riho Yoshioka (Haken Anime!, The Romance Manga Artist.)
