It was a grand day for Spider-Man fans at this year’s CCXP event as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Releasing released exclusive footage of not one but three Spidey-associated projects. Of course, the people were excited about the No Way Home villain’s panel; whereas, Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse (Part One) teaser, stole the show - Sony also dropped and exclusive footage from its upcoming release Morbius. Morbius, a film based on Marvel Comics’ Morbius, The Living Vampire, is an origin story of the said villain and will be released next month as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the exclusive clip, we finally witness the complete transformation of Dr. Michael Morbius into The Living Vampire, which gives him a set of supernatural powers and an unwanted craving for blood. In Morbius, Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) suffers from a rare blood disease and has worked all his life to care for such patients and find a cure for his condition; for which, he is determined to push boundaries of scientific research and experimentation. In his attempt to find a cure, Dr. Morbius attempts to afflict himself with a form of vampirism. However, his cure comes at a price as he gains superhuman abilities, surpassing the superstitious flaws of being a vampire, along with vampire-like physical transformation and a similar thirst for blood.

The clip, which seems to be from somewhere in the middle of the film, shows Morbius and his fiancée, Dr, Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona) held in captivity in some kind of an engine room on a cargo ship. On the ship, Martine tries to keep Morbius’ condition under medical control. As she leaves him strapped to a bed in an isolation chamber, she is visited by an armed goon, who’s keeping a check on the couple. But when they notice Morbius is out of his bed, they check the chamber and find Morbius undergoing monstrous transformation, prompting the goon to shoot at him.

From hereon, an enraged Morbius, escape the chamber and starts causing havoc on his captors. He travels around in the air at superhuman speed as if he’s able to teleport and starts killing off the guards. This gives a complete outlook on Morbius’s vampire profile and is enough to give the audience an idea of his powers and their scale.

Morbius Gets New Set Of Skills

Micheal Morbius is a skilled medical practitioner, but with this new form of vampirism, he has some unusual additions to those skills. Besides the teleportation-like speed, Morbius seems to have gained heightened senses and can dodge bullets, same as Peter Parker did in Far From Home. Of course, his physical appearance changes to the point it can give anyone nightmares, making him more dangerous and frightening. And then there’s this vengeful craving for blood. The action sequences clearly show Morbius slicing up his enemies; however, it’s not going to be gory as it is in R-Rated Deadpool or Logan.

Future of Morbius

Morbius, which is being helmed by director Daniel Espinosa, is taking place in a universe that probably is the same one as Venom; however, the obvious references from the trailer places the film in an unchartered territory, where fans have noticed hints belonging to several previous Spider-Man films of distinct franchises. However, Michael Keaton’s confirmed role in the film, which would be a reprisal of his character, Adrian Toomes/Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming, has brought all these stories much closer.

The end credits of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom’s name coming up in Morbius also hints towards a major connection between these cinematic universes, which both Sony and Marvel are working towards carefully and in total coordination.

How Morbius would deal with these interconnection factors would be addressed when the film hits theaters on January 28, 2022. Besides the interconnection, it would be more interesting to see the original story and how a new character from Marvel Comics makes it to live-action. What are your thoughts on the Morbius?
