Chucky and Annabelle may have to make some room in the killer doll scene, as M3GAN could end up sticking around for a while. From writer Akela Cooper and director Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN is produced by genre vets Jason Blum and James Wan. It tells the story of a robotic doll programmed with artificial intelligence who gets a bit too protective of the young girl she sees as her best friend.
The film is getting very close to its release in early 2023, and ahead of its arrival, producers Blum and Wan spoke about M3GAN in a new interview with Screen Rant. For Blum, the producer has clearly been stoked about the release of M3GAN, going so far as to dress up as the doll for Halloween in October. When asked if that’s a sign that M3GAN could be the “beginning of another Insidious” for Blum, here’s what the filmmaker had to say.

But can a new killer doll movie hold its own in a world where the Chucky and Annabelle franchises have already dominated the scene? Perhaps, as M3GAN comes with a gimmick that makes her a bit more unique from her predecessors. Wan describes how the doll isn’t supernaturally powered, noting how the AI aspect of the character helps give the film the feeling as something that could potentially happen in the real world.
