Nothing sparks internet rumors like a one-line comment from the star of a big movie franchise. Following Jason Momoa’s comments about his “DC dream” coming true under the new management of DC Studios, namely James Gunn and Peter Safran, there has been so much speculation about what that could mean for the franchise’s future and his role as Aquaman. During a recent issue, the actor addressed his comments, particularly whether they relate to the introduction of Lobo, but did so in an expected non-committal fashion.

The arrival of Gunn and Safran as DC Studios’ joint CEOs caused a massive stir of interest last month, with the DCEU becoming the DCU and the franchise now effectively attempting to emanate the success of Marvel Studios. Black Adam is reportedly now set to be at the center of a more cohesive universe, which again appears to have a significant role for Henry Cavill’s Superman to play. Outside of that, there is very little yet known about what the “ten-year plan” for the franchise could be, but Momoa’s interest seems to lie mainly in a project he has wanted to do for some time. When CBR asked the star to “blink twice” if his Twitter comments were about Lobo, Momoa replied:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Well I have to obviously blink, so there’s no way I can get out of this without blinking, but you know that would be amazing if that happened. I’m just happy that [James] Gunn is at the helm and [Peter] Safran, who is just like my heart. So I’m in good hands and I think comic book fans around the world are going to be very excited.”

Could Jason Momoa Play Two DC Roles at Once?

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Discovery may not have a clear plan for their DC output, at least not one that is publically known, but it seems that there has and will always be two different routes for any DC-based movie or TV show to go – those in the DCU and those in their own self-contained universe. Momoa, for now, is Aquaman in the DCU, and there is no sign of that changing in the immediate future, but as a massive fan of Lobo, could it be possible for Momoa to play the character in his own stand-alone project?

Warner Bros. Discovery already has a number of movies occupying their own space in Matt Reeves’ The Batman and its sequels and spin-offs, and also Todd Phillips’ Joker and its upcoming sequel. Both of these franchises have familiar DCU characters, but keep them completely separate from the grander-scaled DCU movies. In this respect, it could certainly be possible for Momoa to take on the role of Lobo without directly impacting his work as Aquaman, pretty much in the same way Chris Evans was able to play the Human Torch in Fox’s old Fantastic 4 movies but also Captain America in the MCU, albeit with several years separating the roles. No doubt, all will be revealed about this and other plans for the future of DC Studios soon.
