Jason Momoa will be writing, executive producing, and starring in Chief of War, an Apple TV+ limited series about the colonization of Hawaii. Momoa will write alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett (Braven), with Doug Jung (Dark Blue, Star Trek Beyond) serving as showrunner. Justin Chon (Pachinko, Blue Bayou) is in talks to direct the first two episodes of the eight-episode series.

As per Variety, “Chief of War follows the story of the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view.” The series marks Jason Momoa’s television writing debut. The Aquaman star previously co-wrote and directed the 2014 thriller Road to Paloma. And Apple must have been quite impressed by Momoa and Sibbett’s pitch, as Chief of War has been given a straight-to-series order. There is currently no word on Momoa’s role in the show or the release date.

Chief of War will be Momoa’s second collaboration with Apple after the sci-fi drama series See. Created by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises) and directed by Francis Lawrence (I am Legend, Hunger Games franchise), See is set in a distant future where humankind has lost its sense of sight. Momoa plays a tribe leader, Baba Voss, who must protect his wife and adopted children, who possess the ability to see. The show has been renewed for a third season.

Chief of War is also being produced by the same team behind See. Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Doug Jung will serve as executive producers on the series alongside Momoa and Sibbett. Chief of War has only just been announced, and more news related to casting and plot details is expected to follow shortly, and the series won’t be streaming on Apple TV+ anytime soon. But Jason Momoa showcasing his creative talents in a series based on a sensitive subject should make for an exciting watch.

After making a cameo in HBO Max’s Peacemaker, Jason Momoa will be reprising his role as Arthur Curry in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The film is a sequel to 2018’s mega-hit Aquaman and also marks the return of director James Wan and stars Amber Heard, Dolph Lundgren, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Aquaman grossed almost $1.1 billion worldwide, and the makers have teased that the sequel will be even bigger. Jason Momoa, who also pitched the film’s story, has also teased a more action-heavy Aquaman 2, saying:

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was supposed to release this Christmas, in competition with James Cameron’s Avatar 2, but has been delayed by 3 months. The film will now hit the screens on March 17, 2023. Hopefully, it’ll be worth the wait.

“We all learned something on the first one. It’s exciting because I haven’t made too many sequels. I just know that it’s, even on the page, it’s absolutely wonderful. There is so much going on. I think the stakes are a lot higher. There’s a lot of comedy. So, I mean, I giggled reading it. There’s a lot of fun, and definitely the action’s [bigger].”
