The Goldbergs kicked off its tenth season on Wednesday with one major change, as series star Jeff Garlin is no longer a part of the show. Following allegations of inappropriate and unprofessional behavior behind the scenes, it had been announced that Garlin was parting ways with The Goldbergs. It was later revealed that his character would be killed off in season 10, so fans knew going in that Garlin would be absent in the new episodes.

In the season 10 premiere, it is explained by Patton Oswalt narrating as the adult Adam Goldberg that Garlin’s character, Adam’s dad Murray, had passed away in between seasons. No specific reason had been given for the character’s death, as it is only noted that Murray had died suddenly a few months before season 10 begins. The show honors Murray by having a spotlight shown on his favorite chair before it’s later converted into a glider for his surviving daughter, Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and her baby; she was revealed to be pregnant at the end of season 9.

“That year, there was one change that made everything stop,” Patton’s Adam Goldberg says in the narration. “Just a few months ago, out of nowhere, we lost my dad. We will always love you, dad. Always. And we will find a way to continue on together. Because, after all, we’re the Goldbergs.”

He also said, “It turns out the people we say goodbye to never really leave us. But that doesn’t mean we don’t miss them.”

Jeff Garlin Says He’s Bipolar

     ABC

Jeff Garlin seemed to indirectly respond to his character getting killed off in the season premiere of The Goldbergs. He doesn’t specifically reference the show, but in a new social media post, he reveals for the first time that he struggles with bipolar disorder. While not entirely clear, it’s possible, given the timing, that Garlin is suggesting that the problems he had with some of his co-workers on the set of the show is related to his diagnosis.

Taking to Instagram, Garlin posted an image of Stafford Repp as Police Chief O’Hara in the original Batman series. In the photo, Repp is reading an issue of MAD Magazine that spoofs Batman. Garlin writes a message in the caption announcing that he struggles with bipolar but that he’s doing the best he can to overcome it.

“Bipolar is a motherf***er,” Garlin said. “Sometimes it’s just too much to deal with. I’m doing the best I can. This the first time that I’ve opened up about this.”
