Shortly after word broke that Netflix had officially renewed Wednesday, series star Jenna Ortega has weighed in on the news. After the Addams Family reboot series debuted on Netflix in November, it was an instant hit. The series quickly rose to become one of the streamer’s most-watched titles of all time, and that was on top of the widespread acclaim from critics and viewers alike. A renewal seemed obvious and inevitable, though it wasn’t officially announced until Jan. 6. With the news now official, Ortega was finally able to give everyone her thanks.
“Thanks to everyone who made this upcoming season possible,” Ortega wrote on Twitter, sharing a post of the official season 2 renewal announcement.

She went on to add, “This has all been pretty surreal.”
Indeed. While remakes and reboots of classic properties are never guaranteed to be successful, there was no certainty that Wednesday would become such the hit that it has. With that said, the goal was, of course, for the series to continue on past its first season. Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have also teased where they plan to take the series in a second season.
“The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season 2, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore,” Gough previously told THR. “For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So now, we do that.”
Gough further teased, “Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well, which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?”
Jenna Ortega Is Celebrating Wednesday
Netflix
Wednesday moves the story forward a few years from most adaptations of The Addams Family, now following a slightly older version of the character after she leaves the family home to attend Nevermore Academy. While there, Ortega uses her special abilities to get to the bottom of a mystery that involves the school and her own family, making an unlikely friend along the way.
Ortega is part of an ensemble cast that also stars Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Christina Ricci, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, and Moosa Mostafa. The series also features Luis Guzman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Isaac Ordonez, and Fred Armisen as other Addams family members.
Wednesday is streaming on Netflix. Season 2 doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
