Only days after Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner was reported to be to in “critical but stable” condition following an accident with a heavy-duty snow plow, the actor took to Instagram to share a selfie from his hospital bed, thanking fans for the outpouring of support and alluding to a more detailed update when he’s not “too messed up to type.”

“Thank you for all your kind words,” the Marvel actor wrote to his almost 19 million followers Tuesday afternoon. Support has been pouring in from all sides as Renner recovers from the accident, a long road that began with two surgeries for the extensive “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” he sustained. “I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

Sheriff’s Office Shares New Details in Sunday’s Snow Plow Incident

Initially reported as “a weather-related incident,” the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says that the Avengers star was attempting to free a family member from roughly three feet of snow near his home in Reno, Nevada when things took a turn for the tragic. After using a powerful snow plow known as a PistenBully or Sno-Cat to free the car, Renner briefly stepped out to talk to his family member and was pulled under the nearly 15,000 pound machine as it began to roll away on its own.
“Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr. Renner is run over by the PistenBully. An eyewitness detailed seeing Mr. Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway,” Sheriff Darin Balaam shared during a press conference Tuesday, adding that foul play was not suspected in the “tragic accident.”
The on-screen superhero found real-life heroes in his neighbors, who witnessed the accident and rushed to the scene with towels to apply pressure until first responders arrived. The beloved actor, who is known for his generosity within his community, was airlifted to the intensive care unit of a nearby hospital where he underwent the emergency surgeries. Renner’s family previously released a statement thanking everyone involved in the actor’s “incredible” care, writing:
