Despite recently discussing his desire to retire, comedy legend Jim Carrey has given a surprisingly interesting (and potentially even somewhat promising) answer to whether he would ever return to play one of his most beloved characters: Ace Ventura. Asked by E! News if there is anything that would tempt him to don the giant quiff ever again, Carrey sort of says yes, so long as a “genius” filmmaker was at the helm.

Ace Ventura 3 directed by Christopher Nolan? Surely an idea that is highly unlikely, but certainly intriguing to ponder. One can only imagine what the Tenet and Inception director would do with Ace and his pet detective adventures. Perhaps the sequel could go all Memento-esque as Ace attempts to crack his latest case? While Carrey’s conditions for returning to the role of Ace Ventura are improbable, it is interesting that he does not simply dismiss the idea entirely. If a director with a vision for the franchise can be found, who knows what might happen…

“I think after the fact when there’s been a lot of years, unless some genius person, director, auteur comes to you with a completely new take on what’s going on, you know. If Chris Nolan came to me and said ‘I want to make Ace Ventura real and I want to do something, you know, something more interesting…’ then I might listen. But for the most part, you know, after a certain time there’s not one cell in your body that is that person anymore so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days and the original inspiration isn’t there.”

Ace Ventura made his big-screen debut way back in 1994’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Starring Jim Carrey as the zany title character, Ace is hired by the Miami Dolphins when their dolphin mascot, Snowflake, is suddenly abducted. The movie was a huge success, grossing $107.2 million against a $15 million budget and launching Carrey onto the A-list along with The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, all of which were released in the same year. There Have Been Rumors of a Third Ace Ventura Outing

While there are currently no official plans for Ace Ventura 3, there have been rumors surrounding the character’s return. Last year, rumors began to circulate that X-Men star Evan Peters was reportedly being sought after to take over as the popular pet detective, with the intention being for Peters to play Ace’s son.

However, if they are planning to bring Jim Carrey back for more, they better hurry up as the actor recently revealed that he is seriously considering retirement. Carrey can next be seen reprising the role of Dr. Robotnik in the video game sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which lands in theaters on April 8.
