Jimmy Kimmel took to his late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live to address Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Best Picture snub at the Academy Awards. While it’s certainly not unusual for superhero movies to be left out of the Best Picture race, there had been a campaign for No Way Home to be the exception to get the nod at this year’s ceremony. This is based on the immense financial success of the film as well as its universal praise with fans and critics alike.

The Academy, however, did not see Spider-Man: No Way Home as deserving of the honor. Kimmel echoes many fans by voicing his displeasure over the snub, arguing that the year’s biggest movie is more than deserving. The comedian points to one of the Best Picture nominees, Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, as a movie that he feels does not compare to No Way Home, making him further question the nomination process.

Kimmel argues that this isn’t just his opinion, as the critical scores of the two films show just how much more well-received No Way Home had been over Don’t Look Up. He theorizes that perhaps No Way Home just isn’t “serious” enough for Best Picture as a superhero movie and goes on to speculate that voters only picked Don’t Look Up after seeing the names of Oscar winners in the cast.

“How did [Spider-Man: No Way Home] not get one of the 10 nominations for best picture? Forget the fact that the movie made $750 million [domestically] and is still going. This was a great movie. It wasn’t in the top 10 best movies of the year? There were three Spider-Men in it. You’re telling me Don’t Look Up was better than Spider-Man? It most certainly was not."

“Even if you go by the critics reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Don’t Look Up’ got a 46% and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has 90%. For god’s sake, ‘Jackass Forever’ has an 89%. Why do best picture nominees have to be serious? When did that become a prerequisite for getting nominated for an Academy Award? You wanna know what happened? Voters looked at the list and saw the names Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep and they checked the box and then they put their kids in the car and went to see the movie ‘Spider-Man.’ And they loved it! But they didn’t vote for it.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home Did Manage to Get a Single Oscar Nomination

Best Picture wasn’t meant to be, but Spider-Man: No Way Home did get an Oscar nomination. The superhero movie is up for Best Visual Effects. Fans will not deny that the film is deserving of this award as well, though it’s certainly disappointing for many of them that No Way Home isn’t up for additional awards, such as the coveted Best Picture.

Along with Don’t Look Up, the movies nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year are Belfast, CODA, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story.

The winners of the Academy Awards will be revealed on March 27 when the ceremony airs on ABC.
