Popular HBO drama series True Detective is bringing Jodie Foster back to television as the lead in its fourth season. Unlike many crime dramas, True Detective quickly became an anthology series by changing each season’s story and its cast, having included big stars like Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Mahershala Ali across its first three seasons. After being officially announced in March, True Dectective season 4 has Issa Lopez writing the pilot, which will be reportedly titled Night Country, which had cast Jodie Foster as the big-name lead for the series.

According to a new report by Variety, Foster will appear in the series as Liz Danvers, “an Alaskan police detective who must work with her partner Evangeline Navarro to investigate the bizarre disappearance of six men operating an arctic research station. As they dig further into the mystery, the detectives find themselves confronting the darkness within themselves and the dark truths surrounding the men’s lives.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Jodie Foster is much better known for her movie work, both as an actress and directorial work, and despite having directed several TV series episodes, including House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Black Mirror and more, True Detective will be the Oscar winner’s first major role on TV in over 45 years. Having made her debut on TV back in 1968 in Mayberry R.F.D., Foster’s last on-screen TV role was in 1975 TV movie The Secret Life of T.K. Dearing. Since then, the actress has provided voiceover parts in Frasier, The X-Files, The Simpsons and Makers: Women Who Make America.

Rumors of Jodie Foster’s True Detective Casting Began Earlier This Year

It was reported back in February that Jodie Foster was wanted as the lead in True Detective’s new season. At the time, the new season was only in early pre-production and the show was set to go into full production in the fall, which would fit with casting being completed in the next few weeks. The series is expected to return to screens in 2023, and while previous seasons have all taken place in the U.S., season four will move the action to the frozen Arctic, and will also return to the two-lead format of the first two seasons.
