Actor Joe Pesci is temporarily suspending his retirement and officially joining the cast of Bupkis. The Goodfellas star is slated to star in Pete Davidson’s slightly exaggerated autobiographical sitcom on Peacock as the 28-year-old comedian’s grandfather. Also starring alongside the two will be former The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie actress Edie Falco, who will play Pete’s mother. A Goodfellas actor and a Sopranos actress. How gangster, right? According to the press release, Bupkis, which Pete is executive producing and starring in, “will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known.”
Pesci’s only regular television gig was as Rocky Nelson in Half Nelson, a 1985 comedy series that only ran for nine episodes and starred Dean Martin and Fred Williamson. The 79-year-old’s last movie project was 2019’s Netflix original movie, The Irishman, which was directed by Martin Scorsese. The film reunited Pesci with his “Goodfellas” co-stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, who played Frank Sheeran, a mobster who claimed that he killed Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), the head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
According to the official synopsis, each episode will be half-hour long and present Davidson’s “unfiltered and completely original worldview” by combining “grounded storytelling with absurd elements.”
Joe Pesci, Edie Falco and Pete Davidson Should Be Quite the Family
Universal Pictures
In 2019, the normally media shy My Cousin Vinny star gave an interview to Empire magazine about his love of dabbling in racehorse breeding.
Lorne Michaels, who worked with Davidson on Saturday Night Live, is on board to executive produce alongside Davidson, who, in turn, will write opposite frequent collaborator Dave Sirus (The King of Staten Island). Judah Miller, who has also worked with Davidson before, will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Susan Rovner, the chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming added,
“I breed racehorses. I started with just my mare, Pesci, who was terrific until her last race. She came in second, and we found out she had three fractures in her leg. So, I turned her into a brood mare. I’m just dabbling in it, you know, because I love the business and I love horses. Always did."
The parts of Davidson’s life that will be featured in Bupkis are still not known. The SNL alum often talks, and jokes, about his upbringing, including the loss of his father, Scott Davidson, a firefighter who died during 9/11. There’s no word on how many episodes Pesci will be featured in, but his return to the screen, big or small, is a significant one.
“Pete Davidson is one of the most sought-after comedians today with his smart, one-of-a-kind humor and honest point of view.”
