The ugly side of Star Wars fandom reared its head again this year when Moses Ingram was subjected to online abuse from trolls for her role in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Someone who has previously been on the receiving end of such hate is John Boyega, and during a new interview, he revealed that seeing Ingram’s co-star Ewan McGregor standing up for her made him very emotional.

Boyega has said that he has no intentions of returning to his role of Finn in the Star Wars franchise. During his time working on the sequel trilogy, the actor had a hard time thanks to racist bullying from supposed fans of the franchise, and he has spoken out against Disney and Lucasfilm for not offering more support. Obviously, a few years have passed since then, but the kind of comments leveled at Ingram on her Obi-Wan Kenobi debut proved that some things haven’t changed, and while Boyega doesn’t know how it was handled by the studio, he was full of praise for McGregor’s actions. He told the Just for Variety podcast:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I don’t know how Disney have done, and I don’t know how they’ve moved with everything. All I know is about specifically Lucasfilm, about the Obi-Wan Kenobi stuff. And I saw that Ewan McGregor video. And that kind of got me, that was nice. That got me a little emotional on that. That’s cool that he showed up for her like that. That’s cool.”

Shortly after the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor shared a personal message on Star Wars’ social media in which he praised Moses Ingram and said that it “broke his heart” to see some of the racial messages that had been sent directly to the actress. He said:

Ingram previously revealed that before taking on the role of Reva in the Star Wars series, she was warned by Lucasfilm that she would likely be subjected to hate messages, and it, unfortunately, turned out that they were right. However, it seems that Ingram was ready to face down online trolls and not let them spoil her moment.

“It seems that some of the fan base has decided to attack Moses Ingram online and send her the most horrendous, racist [direct messages]. I heard some of them this morning and it just broke my heart. As the leading actor in the series, as the executive producer on the series… we stand with Moses.”
