Halloween Ends is billed as the finale of the long-running slasher franchise and will settle the conflict between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers once and for all. Jamie Lee Curtis has also confirmed the same, and Halloween Ends marks her final film playing Laurie Strode.

However, John Carpenter seems to think that Michael Myers will return after Halloween Ends. Carpenter, who directed the 1978 original, says Halloween Ends’ reception, especially its box office performance, will decide if the series really concludes or not. Speaking at the Pennsylvania Steel City comic-con (via Comicbook.com), Carpenter said:

Carpenter echoes producer Jason Blum, who made a similar statement a few months back. The acclaimed filmmaker is also indifferent to the franchise’s future as long as he’s getting his share. Carpenter co-wrote Halloween II and produced its 1982 sequel but had no input in the other sequels and revivals until 2018’s Halloween, which he executive produced and co-composed.

“I didn’t expect there to be a sequel [to Halloween ‘78]. The movie business is ruled by money. [The first] Halloween made so much money, here they came again, the same guys [saying], ‘Hey John, let’s do another one.’ I guarantee you if Halloween Ends makes a lot of money, guess what? Just guess what.”

“I hate to be that kind of a guy, but that’s the truth,” Carpenter added. And about Michael Myers, who’s also called “The Shape,” Carpenter described him as a “force of nature” who just can’t be killed, which is true as we’ve witnessed in several movies. The iconic villain has been shot, stabbed, burned, and electrocuted, but he somehow manages to come back.

“I don’t care about the Halloween sequels. I made the first one as a director, and that’s the only one I care about except for the paycheck I get for the others.”

“He’s just a force of nature, he has no character. He’s pure evil. And you cannot kill him, really. Although, wait until you see Halloween Ends. Wait until you see it.”

Halloween Ends Promises An Epic Faceoff Between Laurie Strode And Michael Myers

John Carpenter believes the box office may be the only true enemy of Michael Myers, but judging by Blumhouse’s two previous Halloween movies, it’s unlikely to be a matter of concern for Halloween Ends. 2021’s Halloween Kills was a severe downgrade from the 2018 legacy sequel Halloween and came out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet it somehow managed to gross a whopping $120 million worldwide against a budget of $20 million. Halloween Ends is touted to wrap the Laurie Strode saga, and since the threat of the pandemic is nowhere as much as in 2021, it will at least be a financial success, unless it’s even worse than Halloween Kills.

Directed by David Gordon Green, Halloween Ends will premiere on October 14, 2022. Hopefully, the film will satisfyingly and uncontroversially conclude the trilogy.

The plot synopsis for Halloween Ends reads:

“Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.”
