WWE superstar turned actor John Cena told the full story of his famous catchphrase. In his WWE matches, Cena would often wave his hand repeatedly over his face while looking at his opponent, a move he dubbed the “You can’t see me.” While promoting his new HBO Max series Peacemaker on The Tonight Show, Cena (in full costume as the DC character, no less) brought up the origins of the gesture, explaining to Jimmy Fallon exactly how the whole thing started as a dare that has since become inspiration for countless invisibility memes on the internet.

“I became a superhero long before donning the Peacemaker costume,” Cena says. “I developed a special maneuver in the WWE called the You Can’t See Me. In which, I put my hand in front of my face and say ‘You can’t see me.’ And the reason I did this is that while we were making the album to which my theme music is on, a younger brother, Sean, was always our litmus test. He liked the same music and he would never go to the studio with us.”

Cena explains that Sean was once played Cena’s WWE entrance theme music. At the time, Sean did a similar gesture with his hand by holding it in front of his face while slightly bobbing his head. Cena found it to be ridiculous, but when Sean dared him to do it on television, the WWE legend actually did it. However, to make the move more visible to the WWE fans sitting in the nosebleed seats, Cena made his hand gesture much more animated by waving it in front of his face rapidly.

“He heard ‘My Time Is Now’ and just did this dance that Tony Yayo did in one of the G-Unit videos. It was like, he put his hand over his head and just kind of bobbed his head like that. And I was like, ‘Man, what are you doing? That looked just ridiculous.’ He said, ‘No, no, it’s Tony Yayo, he’s doing this thing.’ And I’m like, ‘I’ll do it on TV,’ and he’s like, ‘I dare you to do it on TV.’”

After Cena did the gesture, it struck a chord with wrestling fans, and the F9 star would continue to do the maneuver frequently. Speaking on how it’s since become a part of meme culture, Cena added: “Years later, it just overcame the meme culture and now, literally, I’m invisible. People are like, ‘Why is Jimmy Fallon talking to an empty chair?’ So many people are going to say that. So I’m invisible now. On a dare, by accident.”

John Cena stars in the new HBO Max series Peacemaker, a spinoff series spawned from The Suicide Squad with Cena reprising his role. The series also stars Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Chukwudi Iwuji. Ahead of the premiere, James Gunn spoke about the potential to make more seasons of the show.

“We have 87 seasons mapped out. Yeah, we’re gonna be doing this until John and I are 150 years old,” Gunn told Screen Rant. “But yeah, no we all want to continue. We really want to continue. It was the greatest group of people. Obviously, I was already friends with John and Jenn [Holland], obviously, and Steve Agee. But Danielle [Brooks] and Chuk [Iwuji] — [Chuk] is one of my best friends. Chuk is one of the primary characters now in Guardians 3, and he is murdering it on this movie. So, it was just, really, a great group of people and I can’t wait to work with them again.”

Peacemaker premieres on Jan. 13 on HBO Max.
