WWE legend and Peacemaker star John Cena is getting political in his next role. In a first look at The Independent, a new movie coming to Peacock in November, Cena plays an independent politician who has a real chance of disrupting America’s two-party system by winning the presidency. A new photo of the film, shown above, reveals Cena in character behind a podium as his supporters cheer him on. While he shares the same love for the American flag as his Peacemaker character, the roles are otherwise very different from what fans typically see from Cena.

The Independent is directed by Amy Rice (By the People: The Election of Barack Obama) and along with Cena, the film stars Jodie Turner-Smith (Without Remorse), Brian Cox (Succession), and Ann Dowd (The Leftovers). The official synopsis is as follows:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Oddly enough, Cena isn’t the only wrestling icon to go for the Oval Office in fiction. The comedy series Young Rock features Dwayne Johnson playing himself in a version of the future where he’s been elected president of the United States. However, The Rock recently confirmed that this is for storylines only as he doesn’t plan on running in real life. As of now, the only WWE Hall of Famer to have been elected president is Donald Trump.

It’s the final weeks of the most consequential presidential election in history. America is poised to elect either its first female president (Ann Dowd) or its first viable independent candidate (John Cena). Reporting history as it’s made, an idealistic young journalist (Jodie Turner-Smith) teams up with her idol, legendary journalist Nick Booker (Brian Cox), to uncover a conspiracy that places the fate of the election, and the country, in their hands.

Another image from the film provides a peek at the characters played by Turner-Smith and Cox in an apparent argument. Additionally, a clip has also been released featuring more of the two going at it. The journalists have very different views about what should be covered in the press based on the effect that it will have on the fictional election. “Overall what I love about The Independent is that it is a story about fighting to uncover the truth in a post-fact world, no matter who it benefits or hurts, which is very timely considering the moment we are living in," director Amy Rice said of the film, via Variety. “The story is universal because it tackles the moral dilemma of: Do the ends really justify the means? And it also humanizes the process of a person finding their way back after a fall from grace, where it is not about the fall but how you get back up, and everyone can relate to that at some point in their imperfect life. I know I can.”

The Independent will start streaming on Peacock on Nov. 2, 2022.
