For those who were closest to Bob Saget, it’s still hard to believe that the legendary funnyman is no longer with us. Back in January, Saget died in his hotel room in Florida shortly after performing a stand-up comedy show for the final time. He was just 65 years old, and because it was such a surprise, hearing the news felt like a “gut punch” for Saget’s best friend and Full House co-star, John Stamos.

Ahead of the premiere of Dirty Daddy: The Bob Saget Tribute on Netflix on June 10, Stamos spoke with CNN about how the special came together. He first reflected back on when he first got to know Saget as co-stars on Full House, and at that time, there was actually a lot of friction between the two based on how they approached the series. That would end up changing as the two friends grew closer over the years, and Stamos thinks it’s funny how they wound up becoming the best of friends.

As roast comedian Jeff Ross is a part of the special, it’s to be expected that there would be some dark humor during the special. There are some jokes about Saget’s death, but Stamos insists that the late comedian would have really appreciated it. Saget was known to use this kind of humor when grieving losses and would completely understand and support his dear friends using these jokes in his special.

The Bob Saget Tribute Came Together Quickly

The tribute special came together when producer Mike Binder, who was friends with Saget and Coulier, presented the idea with Ross and Stamos set to host. There was very little preparation, as this was put together as a way for Saget’s friends to come together and reminisce as they mourned. Saget’s pal John Mayer was also brought in, as was a band to be featured, and cameras were set up “just in case” anyone particularly famous happened to roll in. Soon enough, that started to happen.

During his life, Saget worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for scleroderma, a condition that had taken the life of his sister, Gay. To truly honor Saget, all proceeds from the tribute special went straight to the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Stamos also hopes that everyone who watches the special will get an idea of just how loving and loved Saget was.

Dirty Daddy: The Bob Saget Tribute starts streaming on Netflix on June 10.
