John Travolta led tributes to Olivia Newton-John after the sad news broke of the singer and actress’ passing on Monday morning. Travolta and Newton-John became movie icons when they appeared together in the hit movie Grease as Danny and Sandy, reunited as their characters in 2019 for a special event, and it was not surprising that Travolta was one of the first to share his thoughts on the news of her death at the age of 73.
On his Instagram account, Travolta shared an image of the star, and wrote, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours front he first moment I saw you and forever. Your Danny, your John.”

Grease is still one of the most popular musical movies ever and the soundtrack of the film is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. For that reason it did not take long for social media to be flooded with more tributes from colleagues and fans alike. “Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time. Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund (ONJFoundationFund.org).”
Many Stars Have Paid Tribute To Olivia Newton-John
Of course, no one has the kind of the career that Newton-John had without being respected and loved by virtually everyone who worked with her. Along with the touching tribute by Travolta, more thoughts and heartfelt words were shared by a number of other celebrities as well as legions of the legendary star’s fans.
Among those to share tributes were singer Richard Marx, who said, “My heart is broken. Rest now, sweet friend. You were as kind and loving a person as there ever been. I’ll miss you every day.” That message was also shared by actress Jane Lynch, who worked with Newton-John on an episode of Glee when the pair duetted on a version of Physical, who simply added, “ONJ. Angel.”
Star Trek legend George Takei shared his thoughts, saying, “We have lost a great, iconic artist in Olivia Newton John, gone too soon from us at age 73. I trust she is now in the great Xanadu beyond. Know that we are forever hopelessly devoted to you, Olivia. Rest in song and mirth.”
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn commented on his “first real crush”, commenting, “Really sad to hear about the passing of Olivia Newton-John. My first real crush as a kid. I loved Grease & her music & I coincidentally also bought & lived in for a while the wonderful home she built in Malibu. May she Rest In Peace.”
