John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of the most highly anticipated projects of 2023, following the significant delays that pushed the film from its initial 2021 release date. The franchise, led by titular star Keanu Reeves, has only grown in success from the first installment in 2014. John Wick reached $86 million at the box office, with the sequel skyrocketing to $171 million. In 2019 the third movie solidified the franchise as one of the most successful in the action genre, reaching a whopping $327 million against a $75 million budget.
Now, the fourth entry is expected to break those franchise records as the film has added even more must-see stars to the cast. One big name is Bill Skarsgård, who starred in It and the recent horror film Barbarian. Unfortunately, his character has been shrouded in mystery thus far, with little to go by from the recently released trailer. However, director Chad Stahelski shared details surrounding Skarsgård’s character during an interview with Collider.

“His character’s name, his broad name, is The Marquis,” Stahelski explains. “The Marquis is, without giving too much away, I wouldn’t really say the antagonist, but he’s the one in charge of cleaning up all the messes from the first three movies.” Fans have slowly learned more about the mythology in the John Wick universe, whether that be the rules of The Continental or the High Table, which is the focus of John Wick 4. The Marquis seems to be another layer in the expanding lore of the franchise, adding even more intrigue to Skarsgård’s upcoming portrayal.
Chad Stahelski Reveals More Details Surrounding Clancy Brown & Shamier Anderson
Lionsgate
John Wick 4 is introducing a host of new actors into the John Wick franchise alongside Bill Skarsgård. Shamier Anderson and Clancy Brown are joining the heavy-hitting action films alongside Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Rina Sawayama.
Chad Stahelski was hesitant to reveal too much during his Collider interview. However, he did share a few more details surrounding the new faces. Brown is known as The Harbinger, saying, “he’s everything that word stands for. He gives the whole sentiment, and he’s like our high-table referee.” Given Wick’s involvement with the High Table in Chapter 4, audiences should assume Brown will have a significant role to play in the unfolding events.
Stahelski was open to sharing more details regarding Anderson’s character, who will be known as The Tracker. The director says, “Everyone’s got a purpose. Everybody’s got a reason. Everybody’s got a motivation. His is, at least initially, he’s self-motivated,” he explains. “[The Tracker] becomes a character that’s in the gray area between the two worlds, the Wick world, and the real world.”
Keanu Reeves is undoubtedly in a different world, as assassins are at every turn. Wick lives in constant danger, and audiences should expect no different in the upcoming fourth installment. Luckily, fans don’t need to wait too much longer to see the titular character alongside his new costars, with John Wick: Chapter 4 arriving in theaters on March 24, 2023.
