John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum ended on a cliffhanger that fans have long awaited resolving. John Wick 4, stylized as JW4, was announced in 2020 as a part of Chad Stahleski’s two-part continuation to Parabellum. At the time, the film was given a July 2021 release date and was supposed to be filmed back to back with a fifth installment. After the pandemic and consequent delays in production due to shutdowns, the makers revitalized the idea and opted for creating the story as one single act.

Now, John Wick 4 is released on March 24, 2023. But, that puts the planned fifth film’s future in a dilemma. In an interview with Collider, Chad Stahelski gave his opinion on the franchise’s future and the fifth John Wick movie. Stahelski revealed that currently, he is unaware of that film’s status, and there isn’t a planned end to the franchise. He said,

The Keanu Reeves-starrer action-adventure, JW4, will follow up John Wick’s fight against the high table after the deadly attack on him in Parabellum. The film will see Ian McShane, Lance Riddick, and Laurence Fishburne reprise their respective roles from the previous movie. JW4 will also star Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Rina Sawayama, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The film’s first look has also offered glimpses of a similar story to unravel, wherein Keanu Reeves looks ready for vengeance. There is no telling if there will be a fifth film. Earlier, JW4 was described as an emotional conclusion, putting hopes of a fifth film in limbo.

John Wick will, however, continue as a franchise via a planned spin-off movie, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, with Emerald Fennell joining the writers’ team. There’s also a television series, The Continental in the making, with Chad Stahelski attached. The series will portray a prequel story with a younger version of Winston Scott (Ian McShane’s character) as one of the leads. The series will also star Mel Gibson and Katie McGrath.
