It’s hard to imagine Star Wars without that legendary score. John Williams helped cement the franchise with his larger-than-life music all the way through the main trilogies, from A New Hope to Rise of Skywalker. According to Variety, he will be returning once more to the galaxy far, far away by composing a theme for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+.
These very sources claim that Williams spent the previous week recording with a Los Angeles orchestra. Obi-Wan Kenobi will star Ewan McGregor, reprising his role as the young Jedi master. The series is slated to premiere May 25th.
This is a rare occasion for Williams in general. While the composer is most well known for his film scores, his work in television is comparatively more minor. His last credit in TV was a theme for 1985’s Amazing Stories. Alongside this, his themes for the news and Olympics continue to be aired decades after they were written on NBC. On that note, however, it’s probably no surprise that Disney would want him to return. Williams’ score for the first Star Wars would earn him the Academy Award for Best Original Score. He would earn nominations for Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker. He also composed the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story and composed the score for Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

John Williams is Tied to the Galaxy
Even after turning 90 in February, Williams is still keeping himself busy. Currently, he is composing themes for Steven Spielberg’sThe Fabermans, which is scheduled to be out in November of this year. He is also working on composing for the next Indiana Jones movie, scheduled for release next year. He will also be conducting on tour with the Vienna Philharmonic on March 12-13, The Philadelphia Orchestra on April 19th, The Pittsburgh Symphony on April 25th, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic on September 2-4 at the Hollywood Bowl.
Williams first helped bring Obi-Wan to life, then played by Alec Guinness, in the original film with his score. This “Obi-Wan Theme” would end up being named “The Force.” Currently, it is not known if this theme will make an appearance in Obi-Wan. The same speculation goes for any of the themes that were featured in the prequel trilogy that initially starred Ewan McGregor as a young Obi-Wan. The show is set to take place after the events of Revenge of the Sith, the final chapter in the prequel trilogy.
While speculations are high, this is certainly a positive detail among all types of Star Wars fans. While the recent additions to the franchise have divided the fandom, one of the unanimously agreed-upon facts is that John Williams’ contributions were priceless. So the idea of any involvement from him will bring about a real treat for viewers. As of now, it is unknown if he will be involved in the scores for all six of the planned episodes, which are reportedly being recorded in London. We’ll have to see when the premiere date comes!
