The social media campaign to recast Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom continues, as attorney Camille Vasquez has emerged as the latest suggestion from Johnny Depp fans. Last week, the defamation trial involving Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard came to its end as the jury will now deliberate if either side had unequivocally proven their case. Depp had sued Heard for $50 million, alleging he’d been defamed by false allegations of domestic abuse, while Heard counter-sued for $100 million, insisting she’s telling the truth and she’s the one being defamed.
During the trial, Vasquez has emerged as the star in the eyes of many observers, even with celebrities as the plaintiff and defendant. Her name has been consistently trending as Depp fans praise the attorney’s skills in the courtroom, feeling she has done an incredible job in defending the former Pirates of the Caribbean star. With the trial over, her name is trending once again as many fans suggest Vasquez play Mera in Aquaman 2, and some are sharing a photoshopped image of Vasquez in the role.

Will Camille Vasquez or Anyone Else Replace Amber Heard as Mera?
Camille Vasquez is not an actress, so there’s obviously no reason to believe she’d be genuinely up for the role of Mera in Aquaman 2. Previously, fans had been rooting for other popular actresses to get the part. Emilia Clarke has come up a lot with fans as a good option for Mera in the DCEU. It has been stated in the trial that Amber Heard and Jason Momoa had a lack of chemistry, which led to potential recasting discussions.
Many fans feel Clarke would be a perfect replacement given her proven chemistry in Momoa from their work together on Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, Blake Lively has been suggested by many other fans. Others will have their own opinions on whether Heard should stay in the role or have it go to someone else, but, in any case, there does not seem to be any indication of Heard getting removed from the film.
While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom had been postponed to 2023, the film has finished filming. Reshoots with a new Mera would be very costly, and it doesn’t seem likely that this will happen partly for that reason. Heard’s role has been reportedly reduced to less than ten minutes, and during her testimony, Heard confirmed that Mera’s presence had been drastically reduced compared to the original script she’d received. The actress argued in court that the role was reduced due to defamatory statements made by Depp’s legal team, but producer Walter Hamada testified that those comments did not affect Heard’s part in the film.
In any case, plans could always change depending upon the outcome of the trial. If the jury finds Heard guilty, that might make Warner Bros. feel more compelled to have the actress removed from the film. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theaters on March 17, 2023.
