Directed once again by Todd Phillips from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker: Folie à Deux will pick up with Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck aka the Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux is Rumored to be Told Entirely from Harley Quinn’s Perspective

Pop sensation and A Star is Born star Lady Gaga will join the DC cinematic universe as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, with rumors claiming that the follow-up will be told entirely from her perspective and thus transform the story into a musical. “Apparently, Joker 2 isn’t so much a Joker movie, it’s a Harley Quinn… It’s from Harley Quinn’s perspective,” sources have claimed. “And the reason it’s a musical is because that’s how she perceives her relationship with Joker.”

Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the critically acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series back in 1992, Harley Quinn begins life as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum who falls in love with her patient, the Joker. The character has become a staple of the world of Batman, and has been portrayed in live action before by Margot Robbie in the likes of Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and The Suicide Squad.

The decision to tell the tale of Joker: Folie à Deux as a musical came as a surprise to everyone, but composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has since defended the decision calling it “interesting” and “logical.”

“It’s an interesting decision. And I think it’s really exciting to see how it unfolds. And I think it’s somehow logical at the same time. It’s both logical and also very surprising. For me as well as the audience. So far it’s just been a really beautiful conversation and I’m really excited to see how it unfolds.”

The Joker sequel is also due to star Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond alongside Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey. Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released theatrically on October 4, 2024.
