Joker: Folie à Deux, the highly-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed film Joker, is set to take the world by storm with its unique approach to filmmaking. The film, which will star Joaquin Phoenix and pop superstar Lady Gaga, will be a full-blown musical, a move that has left fans of the DC Universe both surprised and intrigued.

According to the film’s composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the decision to make Joker: Folie à Deux a musical was both logical and surprising. Speaking to Variety on the red carpet ahead of a recent BAFTA Tea Party, Guðnadóttir stated:

Details about the plot of Joker: Folie à Deux have been kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that the movie will take place in the iconic Arkham Asylum from the Batman universe. Fans of the Joker and Harley Quinn lore will be thrilled to see the characters in this familiar setting. Additionally, a first-look image was released showing Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck getting a shave in the asylum, adding to the anticipation of the film. The decision to make Joker: Folie à Deux a musical may be a bold move, but it could undoubtedly pay off. The film’s unique blend of music and storytelling may provide audiences with an experience unlike any other.

“It’s an interesting decision. And I think it’s really exciting to see how it unfolds. And I think it’s somehow logical at the same time. It’s both logical and also very surprising. For me as well as the audience. So far it’s just been a really beautiful conversation and I’m really excited to see how it unfolds.”

Margot Robbie, who famously portrayed Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad, may not be reprising her role in the upcoming Joker sequel. Still, she remains excited about the iconic DC villain’s future. Robbie expressed her excitement about Gaga taking on the role during the premiere of her latest film Babylon. During an interview with ET, Robbie said,

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in October 2024, but more behind-the-scenes images are expected to be released later this year.

“I think she’s going to do an amazing job. I’m so excited, it’s all I could’ve ever hoped for Harley was that she would become one of those characters, kinda like Batman or Hamlet, that gets handed from actor to actor, everyone gets a go at playing them.”
